The Red Series by Aquila offers a unique feeling and a strong sound. Until now, it was necessary to increase a strings gauge to reach lower frequencies, which makes the string less bright and responsive.

Aquila's new approach is nothing less than revolutionary: leaving the gauge unchanged, but increasing the specific weight of the material string by string. As a result, the instrument sounds brighter, more powerful and more responsive through the entire range of the fretboard.

The strings also maintain their intonation better (because thicker strings need to be fretted harder, pulling them farther out of tune).

  • Big improvement over Nylgut for banjolele

I wasn't really sure if these Aquila Reds would make much of a difference over the Aquila Nylguts that came on my Ohana Tenor open-back banjolele. After letting them settle in, I find the tone is much more "plunky," and not as warm as the Nyguts, but that's what I was looking for. It really sounds like a banjo, rather than a uke that's reminiscent of a banjo. And, the instrument is a bit louder too. These are my go-to banjolele strings from now on. Maybe the only downside to putting these strings on my banjolele is it sounds so good, I don't feel like I need to buy a banjo now.

  • Very cool look, and a unique sound.

I bought these for the look but love the tone as well. These look great on a Córdoba I purchased to have a back up for gigs. They disappear in the wood. The tone is sharp. It made the uke a great alternative instead of a back up.

  • Good look and feel.

They look cool and sound great. Definitely a little warmer than standard nylon strings. Tune up quick and hold it.

Once I tried Aquila Reds, I never bought another string but Aquila. I use their Bionylon and Lava strings as well, but only when a white or black string would look better on the ukulele. Their Nylgut comes stock on most quality ukuleles. The Reds sound fantastic, and once stretched, stay in tune for a really long time. Aquila is the only uke string manufacturer that makes their own strings. Everything else is basically repackaged fishing line unless you go to a wound string.
