Learn to Play Guitar Complete combines Levels 1 and 2, and the book and DVD work together for lessons you can see and hear. You'll start with the basics like holding the guitar, reading music, and playing chords, then move on to specific techniques for several guitar-playing styles and genres. Styles covered include blues, rock, jazz, classical, and folk, and you'll hear every example performed by a live guitarist. This is an excellent way to get started playing guitar and advance to an intermediate skill level.

See it, hear it, and play it: every book in Alfred's MAX[T] series includes an instructional DVD to maximize learning.

I have lots of beginning guitar books. Thesis the one I used when I decided to make myself learn to read music on guitar. Didn't use the DVD much, but the book is really good.

The book and DVD are good for a beginner. The first half or so of the book is laid out perfectly so as to provide learners with the fundamental concepts and then gives them a chance to practice them. There is good balance between teaching theory and technique. The DVD helps by visualizing these concepts and playing the song exercises. However, as informative as it is on music theory and guitar technique, the book does lack detail as it progresses with bigger concepts like scales and chords. To fill these gaps, I would recommend supplementing the book with other instructional materials. Regardless, the book does have enough to get any beginner started and is worth the price.
