Artiphon Orba First Impressions - The Phronetic

Introducing Orba by Artiphon – An instrument designed for your hands

Orba by Artiphon – Overview & Demonstration

Artiphon Orba Shorts #1: Have Yourself a MIDI Little Christmas
Description
Orba is a handheld synth, looper and MIDI controller that lets anyone make music. Play notes and beats on its touch-sensitive surface, add effects with movement gestures, and layer your ideas into songs with the built-in looper. Connect to the Orba App to customize your instrument and share your creations with friends. It’s never been easier to make music, anywhere you go.
Play With Gestures
Orba’s touch and motion sensors combine to capture even your most subtle gestures. Tap it with one hand or both, with your fingertips or thumbs, or shake and wave it through the air. You can slide around each pad, or go crazy with some vibrato. Circle your fingers over the top like a singing bowl, or strum an invisible guitar.
The Orba App
The Orba companion app lets you explore even more. Available for iOS, Android, macOS and Windows, the Orba app will let you access more sounds and settings. The app is also where you’ll be able to save and edit your loops and songs. And of course, you can share your creations to social media and export to your favorite music-making software to keep building your beats.

Actually alot of fun
This is actually a pretty cool little device. I'd like to see more options for scales and chords though. The "lead" settings only give you one sound that has the diatonic scale (which is kindve annoying seeing as that's a much more utilized scale for lead synths), so hopefully they add that as an option in the future for the rest of the baked in sounds. Outside of that, for what it does, it does it really well. Very easy to pick up, play, create loops and is surprisingly expressive. Very well worth the money.

Disappointing.
As a MIDI controller, it's just ok, if you're up for the setup; Bluetooth MIDI is only available for Mac products and an in-depth MIDI editor is only available for Max for Live, so elsewise you've got cabling and custom setup to mess with - it works, it's just that their marketing kind of leads you to believe that it's an out-of-the-box plug-and-play experience for everyone, when it won't be for many users. ... As a stand alone device, the Orba does not measure up to the hype: Sounds are basic, uninspiring and uneditable. There is often-occasional latency when triggering the internal sounds - latency which records onto the onboard sequencer - and the onboard sequencer does not have the ability to quantize, so it can take many frustrating takes to record a simple idea in-time. Also, all sounds have clicks and distortion through the headphone jack, regardless of played velocity or device volume. Switching between sounds while loop-recording causes all sound on the device to cut out for half a beat, with accompanying crackle/distortion, which is jaring and kills any vibe. There's a four part sequencer, but after recording-in the third part, expect distortion and crackle on all parts upon playback - frankly, the audio from this thing just sounds bad, all the time. Controls are janky and inconsistent. Sometimes pressing the record key combo will record, but sometimes it will not record, but switch instruments instead (it shouldn't do this.) Sometimes instrument selection will switch mid-recording, ruining your take (it shouldn't do this.) Sometimes selecting the bass sound will trigger the record button (it's not supposed to do this either.) User-recorded songs will occasionally self-delete at random, gone forever. All-in-all, while Artiphon sure did a good job of marketing this product - on the ground, outside of a paid reviewer's hands, the Orba is poorly designed, badly implemented and frustrating to use. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone

I bought 3 of these and boy they do not let you down. My 7 year old daughter loves playing it. To spark a desire for learning music it was great. I am learning how to add different instruments to our band and it works with garage band like a dream. Stand alone it is great also. Worth the purchase!!!

This thing is a toy. Take all the negative connotations you want from that. It IS fun to hit the pads and record loops with but it ends with that. I'm an experienced Ableton user and bought this for the MPE MIDI functionality. I could not get this to connect to Ableton AT ALL. I tried everything. This was back in the beginning of 2021 so maybe this has been addressed but at the time I had to return it as my intended purpose in buying it was completely unattainable. Sonically this is VERY limited. You are restricted to a number of preset tones and that's it. Also I could not get the firmware to update and also could not get it to connect or the iOS app. All in all this thing was a complete disappointment. It looked to be very cool but it does not deliver on any professional front.
Worth "note"ing

It's a lot of fun and has so many possibilities. I barely have scratched the surface with it. The biggest problem is not annoying everyone around you as you can't put it down. (i blame it on their envy that they don't have one).

Very cool handheld looper! Really good for when you're waiting around somewhere or traveling and can't bring your full setup. I also like using it for inspiration. It's quick and easy to put together a quick layered loop that I can add on to when I bring it into my DAW.
