I have used many flangers over the years and the Boss BF-3 Flanger is in the top of the class. Whether you want a touch of coloring or oceans of swirl, this pedal will do it all. The BF-3 features a pink metal casing, the same easy click-less switching and red led check light that all boss pedals are known for. It has four main adjustment knobs, of which, the mode knob has the most variety of options. "Standard" mode covers all the basic amounts of flange for most applications. For those who like their flange extra thick, there is "Ultra" mode which gives more of an edge than the standard provides. "Gate/Pan" mode gives a slicer effect that is like a tremolo with a light swirl, and "Momentary" gives you the option of keeping the pedal active only when the pedal is depressed, in a non-latching fashion, for those quick touches. As with most flangers the rate knob controls the speed of the swirl, and the depth knob adjusts the amount of thickness in the effect in contrast to the instrument itself. The last knob is a 2 stage control. The inner knob controls the resonance, and the outter knob controls manual. These 2 work together to adjust which range is affected by the flanging. At complete polar opposites, at one end it will give a lower swirl, and when reversed, it gives a a higher metallic flange. If you depress the pedal and hold it for a minimum of 2 seconds you can set the tempo so your effect speed is in sync with your music. When this is accesed you simply set it by tapping a few beats on the pedal in time with your song and it syncs up instantly. The BF-3 also has duel outputs so it can be operated in mono or stereo for maximum effect. The only feature missing on this pedal is a volume control knob, but with the thickness control you can pretty much compensate for its abscence. Overall the Boss BF-3 Flanger is everything most of the great flangers are and then some. It allows for complete control over any type of flanging effect you could ever desire. With a descent price and pro features the BF-3 proves to be yet another classic from Boss.
