Disappointed in Katana

I'm disappointed with this amp. I expected a lot more from Katana than this. The Katana mini-x just leaves me scratching my head trying to figure out if I should keep it or send it back. What I like: It's a nice looking little amp. It's battery powered. It has a small footprint, handy to drag around. In "clean" mode it sounds ok for a practice amp. It has built in reverb. Bluetooth connects immediately to smart phones etc. The headphone jack is a welcome addition. What's not good: The 5" speaker rattles/fuzzes/buzzes at higher volumes especially when trying to use fuzz, crunch and some of the other effects. Many others have mentioned this issue. That's a big problem. The battery is a very old Nickel metal hydride type which is a very old and cheap tech with known mechanical memory charging issues. A Lipo battery is what was expected. Most of the effects are somewhat useless as they don't sound good at all with the exception of reverb but even the control of reverb and delay on this unit is very limited. Bluetooth is a big disappointment. Bluetooth was a big reason for getting this amp so I could play backing tracks while playing. The problem is that the sound from the amp using Bluetooth is muffled and with very low volume. My iPhone bare bones plays backing tracks much louder than this 10 watt amp does. What's up with that? Again, That's a huge problem. The controls are all on the front for easy access instead of on the top like a lot of other amps but when this thing is sitting on the floor the controls disappear and are hidden. So you need to sit it up on something to easily see the controls which means it needs to be generally at eye level. I haven't tried it with headphones yet and I'm hoping that's better than the little 5" speaker. Here's what needs to happen: Katana needs to fix the fuzz buzz issue with the speaker in this amp. They need to fix the Bluetooth so the sound coming out is louder and volume adjustable. They need to give you more control over the reverb and delay adjustment. It probably does not need any of these other effects at least until the buzz at higher volumes gets sorted out. Still on the fence on keeping it because if you "ONLY" use it clean then it's acceptable. Anything else other than that is sketchy. I just don't know. Because of all these issues I don't think I could recommend this to any of my friends.
I would purchase this amp again.

For the limited space I have at home this amp is perfect to store anywhere and for how small it is has a good amount of power and sound. I would buy this amp again and again. One of my best purchases to date! The effects it comes with are also pretty cool! #sweepstakes

After trying a few mini amps and watching reviews on others, I decided not to cheap out on a worse amp and went for the katana mini x, and I'm glad I did. For its size, it packs quite a punch and doesn't get too washed out when you play over the bluetooth function at reasonable volumes. The sound quality and available tones are awesome given its portability and I've thoroughly enjoyed playing with it. The mid channel between clean and overdrive has a lovely tone and I spend most of my time there even though I usually lean toward heavier distorted channels on other amps, and it brings out nice, warm tones even on guitars with pickups made for shredding, especially if you adjust your tone/high pass knob on the guitar. The 10 hour battery life is great, and it charges up quickly. The bluetooth sound quality isn't going to rival a higher quality, purpose-built speaker, but it's more than enough to get the job done and gets plenty loud. I only have a couple minor critiques; The available gain on the overdrive channel is great, but you can't use all of it at higher volumes due to the small speaker size. However, I'd rather have the option to use it at lower volumes than not at all, so I'm glad the option is there. Also, due to the nature of the channel selector being a three-way mechanical switch, there is no input jack or ability to use a selector footswitch to change between clean, mid, and distorted channels, which is a slight bummer when trying to play along with songs that require switching. Lastly, while most of the effects are great, I'm a little disappointed by the depth of the wah effect. I'm partial to a nice wah wah, and the katana mini x leaves something to be desired in that respect. Aside from those few cons, this amp easily outshines the rest of the competition in its class, and I would recommend it to anyone. It's an outstanding little piece of kit. My only regret is having bought a travel sized acoustic guitar instead of electric a few months before buying this. Now I can shred on the go, so time to start shopping!
I enjoy using this.

Cool practice amp that sounds great. Only issue is the speaker cover position is forward of the jack such that my cord's right angle 1/4" plug won't fully seat because the plug body hits the speaker cover.

Can I play an electric bass on this amp?
It's not advisable. A guitar amp is not designed to reproduce the low frequencies that are typically produced by a bass guitar. This means that it can compromise the sound quality of the instrument. Besides this, improper use of the speaker can also lead to damage.submitted8 months ago
