BOSS VE-8 Acoustic Singer

KT Tunstall Interview

Roland Sessions: KT Tunstall "Suddenly I See"
Description
The Boss VE-8 Acoustic Singer Multi-Effects Pedal is the all in one effects solution for singer songwriters and acoustic musicians. This innovative pedal provides studio quality vocal processing, as well as premium effects for acoustic guitars. Packed with built-in harmonies, reverb, delay, modulation and multi part looping for vocals and acoustic guitars, the VE-8 is perfect for live performance or recording.
Vocal Processor Creates Impressive Harmonies
The VE-8 features a vocal processor with real time harmonies that can instantly create up to three harmony parts from your vocal input. Choose from a variety of harmony types, including 3rd, 5th and octave harmonies. The pitch and level of each harmony part is adjustable, allowing you to easily create the perfect blend for your music.
Premium Acoustic Guitar Effects
For acoustic guitars, the VE-8 provides high-quality BOSS effects like chorus, reverb, delay, compression, notch filter and more. The Acoustic Resonance effect restores the natural tone of piezo pickups, while Ambience allows you to adjust the space and overall environment of your tone. With the Phase Inverter, you can correct phase issues between mic and pickup signals. The VE-8 gives acoustic players an amazing range of sounds for both live performance and recording.
Powerful Looper with Drum Patterns
The VE-8 incorporates an advanced looper that's simple to operate, yet powerful enough for any performance application. You have 80 seconds of loop recording time, enough memory for 200 phrases and up to 10 looped layers. Rhythms provide a built in drum machine with 40 different patterns to keep your loops tight.
Simple Interface and Hands-Free Control
With a streamlined interface, the VE-8 is designed to minimize complexity. Dedicated knobs, buttons, and an expression pedal provide hands-free control of your effects and loops. The VE-8 also features an XLR mic input, stereo 1/4" outputs, headphone out and MIDI I/O, allowing for integration into any live setup.

It's about time this box came out!
I haven't been that crazy about the idea of looping until recently but I've been looking at harmony boxes for vocals. Looked at several of those, even bought one and returned it last year. I play mainly electric guitar in a band but have been considering deleting doing a solo thing again. When this came out I was all over it! I'm in the honeymoon phase still but man it sounds good and is easy to use. My only wish is that it had some Bluetooth capabilities so that I could change some settings on my iPad!

Yes, No, Maybe
I tried the amp in store, got excited and bought the pedal as i have lots of amps. Was very disappointed with the limited use. Most video's I watched that helped convince me to buy were being done by 2 people at a time. I saw why when I tried the pedal at home. Need a third hand to push the tiny buttons in live performance as you can't use it on the floor except to turn it off and on. IF it had the external (expensive pedal, maybe). The sound was not up to BOSS quality.. & I am a boss fan, use lots of their equipment, this is a let down. That said, I am not happy with the pedal box, yet I think I am now convinced to be fair and try the 120 watt amp. I really would like to have this equipment but it has got to be better than the pedal, the pricing does not match the value. I don't like returning anything, but I will this pedal. I will give the amp a try, IF & WHEN they choose to stock it! So far my store had only one 60 watt amp & one pedal. That leads me to think they also don't feel it will sell as the HOT ITEM they claim in the ads! SO, I am going to one day give it a try and hope it don't let me down as this did. Good item for amateur artist, not for the experienced pickers. (Except those who are getting them as free demo's and have to give a GREAT REPORT!) Sorry, quality just not there, price may be twice what actual worth is. Try it, you may just like it. Wish I did!

Simple and clean, but could use a little more flexibility

This unit seems like a great unit from a reputable company, and it is. I think it could use a bit more flexibility with a screen instead of knobs, but it pretty much does the job it says it will. Sturdy and road-worthy. Prefer the TC-Helicon Acoustic Play, but that's now outdated...

The guitar effects work well and do make the guitar sound better but I don't see myself using the large range of chorus effects for acoustic guitar. I'm disappointed with the harmonies. Many are barely heard with the level maxed out. (Which is the main reason I bought the unit) The guitar looper works fine. I haven't tried the voice loop yet.

I was initially excited, however that quickly went away. 1) The mic input distorts if you have a powerful voice. Currently, I run a Shure 87A into a Digitech Vocalist Live 3. I have absolutely ZERO issues, but I was looking for something newer and I liked that the Boss had separate effects for the vox and guitar. Nevertheless, I can't have my vocal distorting. 2) The vocal enhance. I do like SOME pitch correct. I found with this that if you want more "enhancement", mean EQ, compression, etc that is in the enhancement effect, you have to have more pitch correction. That is not acceptable, either. It needs more flexibility in adjustment. The guitar sound was good, but not good enough to destroy my vocals. I returned it.
Sound modifications are good - but not great.

Guitar effects are sufficient to dial in a pleasant tone. Vocal effects seem harsh and unnatural to me.

I've been playing with this and I love it. There's a lot of learning on how to use it to its full potential, but it was fun right out of the box! I play worship at church and this will definitely be incorporated into that!
Takes lots of tweaking, huge time waster

I've had the VE-8 for a few years and I recently realized how much of my time I've wasted. It take forever to get the harmonies dialed in where they don't get too glitchy, I wouldn't ever trust using this thing live. The presets are awkward to switch unless you want to used an external switch but then you're taking the use of the 2 external switch options so then when you switch keys you have to bend over, definitely not great for my bad back and it's too big to keep off the floor to make using the buttons easier, otherwise adjusting the on board guitar effects are a real pain. Most of all, this thing has a horrible hiss through any PA system or acoustic amp I have tried it with, fun to screw around with at home but would NEVER use live. On the plus side like all Boss pedals it's built like a tank.

The product description for the VE-8 states, "Powerful Looper with Drum Patterns The VE-8 incorporates an advanced looper that's simple to operate, yet powerful enough for any performance application. You have 80 seconds of loop recording time, enough memory for 200 phrases and up to 10 looped layers. Rhythms provide a built in drum machine with 40 different patterns to keep your loops tight." But I cannot find how to access the drum machine in the product or in the manual. Can you please advise?
You're right — the Boss VE-8 Acoustic Singer product description mentions "drum patterns" alongside the looper, but the manual and interface are surprisingly quiet about it. Here's the situation: There is no separate drum machine you can trigger manually like you would with a standalone rhythm box. The "40 drum patterns" are only available as part of the looper function. You access the drums while looping — they are loop-based rhythm accompaniments, not a full independent drum machine. Here’s how to access the rhythms: Press the Looper button to enter Looper mode. Hold down the Looper button — this opens the Looper settings. Turn the Memory/VALUE knob to select a rhythm pattern. You can choose from different styles (rock, pop, shuffle, etc.). Start your loop — the rhythm will follow. Some things to know: The rhythm plays only when the looper is active. You can't start the drums without the looper running. You can't change individual drum sounds (like swapping just the snare). Tempo is tied to your looping (you can tap tempo or adjust it manually). The VE-8's "drum machine" is a feature inside the Looper section only — it's not a separate rhythm generator.submitted2 years ago
