Multi-Neutron Live Performance

Behringer

collapse expand iconDescription

Powerful and affordable, Neutron's sound is as striking as its design. It’s a paraphonic analog synthesizer with a semi-modular architecture that sits perfectly on your desktop, or can be easily integrated into a Eurorack system. Semi-modular synths offer a lot of flexibility for a wide range of users, including anyone interested in experimenting with modular synthesis. The most noticeable feature on the Neutron is its 56-point patchbay, one of the larger patch systems seen in a semi-modular synth of this class. For the sound, there are two analog oscillators each with five variable waveshapes, a 2-pole multimode filter, two analog ADSR envelopes and a host of additional sound-shaping controls.

Behringer Neutron Semi-Modular Analog Synthesizer

Lavish sound, for a modest price

Neutron delivers a surprising amount of power for such an affordable price. It's not trying to emulate or model something else, it is its own instrument and it is capable of producing a wide variety of sounds with a high range of intensity. At its core, Neutron features dual 3340 analog oscillators that blend seamlessly though five different wave types including tone mod, sawtooth, pulse, triangle and sine wave, creating some massive sounds with a ton of weight. The LFO also features five different waveshapes and is capable of going well into audio rates creating some really aggressive tones. There is also a 2-pole Moffatt filter with a style and sound of its own.

Behringer Neutron Semi-Modular Analog Synthesizer

Prewired for immediate mayhem

Neutron is wired to be a standalone synthesizer with plenty of parameters for immediate access to designing sounds, but where the power really lives in is in its 56-pint patchbay where you can override the internal wiring and create some complex and interesting signal routing. Neutron's patchbay has 32 inputs and 24 outputs offering plenty of options for routing signal internally or integrating Neutron with other Eurorack compatible modules. Departing from the traditional layout of similar style synths, all of Neutrons patch points are located on the right side of the synth keeping all of your patch cables out of the way of the controls.

Behringer Neutron Semi-Modular Analog Synthesizer

The whole pacakge

Neutron features some additional tools to color your sound including a built-in Bucket Brigade style delay, able to produce some interesting textures from short chorusing delays, to longer random effects. If you want to go further, try modulating the delay time by rerouting internal signals or using external Eurorack modules. There's also a built in analog overdrive that can take your sounds over the edge. As for connectivity, the Neutron has 12V DC input with included power supply, USB MIDI connectivity, MIDI IN/THRU, 1/4" headphone output, 1/4" output and a 1/4" input for processing external sounds. All in all, Neutron's sound is unique and the price is unbeatable. So, if you're looking for a new desktop synth or an inexpensive Eurorack module, this could certainly be it.

You might not want this as your first synth, or your only synth. But if you've got some experience and are looking for an analog mono, this could be a top choice. Sounds great even without patching. Once you start patching it, it's up to your imagination. It's got old time draw backs like no patch storage, no cc send/receive, and so on. But if you realize that going into it, it's not much of a problem. The sound and the price make up for any minor inconveniences it may throw at you. Highly recommended.

I got one of these on sale, then the price dropped so I got a second one. I figured it would be good for the polyphonic capabilities (with 4 oscillators so 4 voices into one amp, the same way the PolyD works anyway) but the polychain and Paraphonic modes don't work so well together. That said, one alone is amazing for bass, smoother and creamier than a moog, and with more oscillator shapes (saw but no shark tooth, but it can blend between shapes). The filter is super resonant, and the envelopes are pretty fast for analog. Having a second one doesn't give me the voices I thought it would, but stacked in a mono synth, 4 oscillators is a *ton*, esp when spaced in octaves! Also, it gives me 2 ADSR envelopes, an LFO, a mixer, 2 attenuators, slew rate limiter, and a second filter (one in low pass and the other with key tracking resonant high pass for really big sub sounds). These modules on their own (if you were going to expand your Neutron into Eurorack) would add up real fast! A filter like this alone could be $200, so the second neutron was easily cheaper than all the rack units (plus the case and power supply you'd need) In short, they're red, so that's bold (good or bad depending on your view), the tuning knobs are too big and sensitive, but you can pull them and swap them to filter cutoff/res (or whatever you want), the patch bay is a little confusing and hard to read on the red faceplate with inverted striped background... Might need more patch cables, but it's a great piece that should last a long time, remain relevant in any setup, and probably hold some value down the road.

Behringer hit a home run with this one. It's relatively inexpensive and has a massive sound. If you are new to modular (which I am), it's a great way to start!

Buckets and buckets of Eurorack modules in a tiny red box. The hidden internal wiring will help you learn a traditional mono-synth signal flow. It will be a bit of a hindrance as you try to remember it when interfacing with a traditional Eurorack system. "Polysynth" is only available over MIDI.

Open box may show minor signs of wear but nothing that affects how it plays.
