Exactly what you need for small band gigs
I used this for the first time at a small venue with a 4 piece band. We mic'd the kick drum, e guiltar, a guitar, 3 vocals, sampler, and DI bass. It worked flawlessly. The ipad never lost connection. However, I do advise to set the "sleep" to "never". This way, it'll never disconnect, or go black on you, when you need to adjust settings quickly. I haven't had a chance to dive into the depth of the effects, but there are MANY to choose from. The best part of this setup is that you don't need a sound guy! We save great money and still have a Pro sounding rig. I matched this unit up with 2 x QSC K12's on a stick for mains, as the venue was too small to need subs. I had 3 x QSC K10's for monitors, plus my in-ear setup behind the drums. The most impressive part of this, was how quiet the in-ear mix was. It sounds NO different than our X32. Look at it this way: You can buy a 16 channel mixer, case, rack, etc and take up half of the back of your compact SUV. Or, buy this unit that's no bigger than a shoe-box. You now have a chance to fit an entire PA in your small SUV. Good bye trailer, Tahoe, Suburban, gas-guzzler!!

Unreliable
I wanted to like this mixer, relatively inexpensive, light weight, reasonable audio mixer functionality, few mechanical knobs/switches to break (3 on this versus 400 on other comparable analog mixers). It has 16 actual channels and 2 limited functionality channels. Since there are only 3 controls on the unit, (power, headphone volume and WiFi select switch) It can only be controlled by a remote console which can be a laptop, tablet, phone etc. This allows for increased functionality but you must have a reliable connection for it to work which is the biggest problem. You can't trust the WiFi to work reliably. The AP function only supports WEP encryption which is very weak security (essentially none). What ever you connect to (tablet etc.) will have to access via WEP and will be vulnerable to security attacks so it had better not be a device with any personal info, passwords etc. The WiFi client mode does have WPA2 but the connection is quite unreliable, the routers can see connect but the application see the connection drop frequently, even in low interference circumstances. Note to that the WiFi is only 2.4G The Ethernet connection works OK so you can connect to an Access Point (AP) reliably but that is an additional expense another item to carry and maintain. Secure AP's are not that inexpensive. You could connect it to a router but then the control device will need to that router and they usually means the control device can't access other WiFi connections. It would be better to use a mixer that has decent WiFi or some other reliably connect to the control surface of interest. A Soundcraft Ui24R is a better bet. The extra cost is worth the reliability. Also it has a web server so the control surface only needs to run a web browser to control it no, other software.

I used this at our first gig and it was perfect. I used an external router and mix station on the macbook pro. Then I used it at another event and this time used mix station on my iphone. Worked like a charm. It's the perfect solution on a budget and we sound great on it and it's easy to setup. #sweepstakes

I needed this for my kids' band - for live performances and if you do what everyone else says and use an external dhcp router/wifi, it works perfect. I use that and Mix Station on the macbook pro. Everyone plugs in, connect to the router that's connected to the xr18 via cat5 cable and wallah. I love it. After using it one time, I was told by one person who goes to all their performances it was the best live sound yet. Why? Because you can sit in the crowd and control the sound. It also has a port for using behringer personal mixes but I think that system is pretty expensive. Right now I'm just sending out aux1 and 2 to some floor monitors and "guess" on the mix with them cueing me in with hand signals as we go and it works for us. I don't know how long this will last but my review is based on my first performance with it and I can tell you it worked exactly the way I hoped it would. Love it!

The product is generally good - it got 2 major solvable issues: 1. The internal WiFi router is really unreliable - use external router as workaround 2. The manufacturer app for iPad won't work on newer IOS. There are 3rd party versions that are reasonably good. Beside these 2 issues - this digital mixer should be more then enough for most live music bands.

I had to sell it years ago because my band broke up. Now I'm back at it. We use it as our in ear monitor mixer with a splitter but we can also run our own sound as well.
Great board option

Can you have a computer connected to the Ethernet port and also WiFi a tablet or phone at the same time? As an example, use the laptop as the main mixing board, just like an analog mixer, and also be able to link a tablet or phone to adjust monitor mixes without having to walk over to the laptop. Could each band member adjust their own monitor mix from their own phones? How many devices can be "connected" at one time?
You can have up to 4 devices connected at a time.submitted6 years ago
