Beyerdynamic's DT 900 PRO X model presents a pair of open-back circumaural studio headphones that are suitable for professional recording and monitoring in the studio as well as on the road. This is enabled by the STELLAR.45 driver, developed in Heilbronn, which reproduces the best studio-quality sound loudly and powerfully on all playback devices. Whether on an interface, laptop, tablet or mobile phone, there are no limits to creativity. The detachable mini-XLR cable can be replaced by cables of different lengths and connection options. The rugged spring steel headband construction gives the over-ear headphones a secure fit and ensures durability.

The supple velour ear pads are soft to touch, as you would expect, and ensure comfortable air circulation. Thanks to soft memory foam, the headband adapts ergonomically to the shape of the head and, like the ear pads, it can be replaced when necessary. Robust and high-quality materials complete these headphones, which are handmade in Germany.

After 20 plus years of mixing with my trusty K240's, I needed an upgrade, and these phones definitely are an upgrade. They are very neutral sounding without any hyped lows or highs, and they sound much better at higher volumes than the K240's. Extremely comfortable for long sessions.

The DT 900 PRO X isn't a massive leap in pure resolution, but it is a substantial step forward in tuning balance, versatility, comfort, and build quality. Here’s a breakdown to help you determine if the DT 900 PRO X is a major step up from your AKG K702: Sound Signature Comparison AKG K702: Neutral-bright tuning, with a strong emphasis on detail retrieval and soundstage. Exceptional spatial imaging and wide soundstage—great for orchestral, ambient, and spatial audio work. Bass is tight but slightly lean, especially sub-bass. Treble can be a bit sharp or "cold" to some ears. DT 900 PRO X: More balanced and musical tuning, with a slight V-shaped curve. Fuller and more present bass response, while still controlled. Smoother and slightly warmer midrange, good for long sessions. Treble is energetic but less fatiguing than older Beyer models (like the DT 990). Not as wide a soundstage as the K702, but with excellent imaging and depth. Build Quality & Comfort K702: Lightweight with a self-adjusting headband. Some find the bumps on the headband irritating over time. DT 900 PRO X: Built like a tank. Metal yokes, detachable mini-XLR cable, plush velour pads, and extremely durable. Many users find it more comfortable for longer sessions. Power & Impedance K702: 62 ohms but can be picky with amplifiers. Needs a clean, powerful amp to shine. DT 900 PRO X: 48 ohms and highly efficient. Designed to run well from audio interfaces and portable gear—a huge plus for modern setups. Use Case Shift The DT 900 PRO X offers better versatility across genres and platforms. If you're doing mix translation checks on different systems or switching between studio and mobile rigs, it's a more convenient tool. The K702 still excels in critical analysis, especially in genres that benefit from its spacious and analytical nature. Summary: Step Up? If you want better bass, smoother treble, and more flexibility in your setup, the DT 900 PRO X can feel like a significant upgrade in usability and enjoyment. If your priority is ultra-accurate, airy presentation, especially for orchestral or spatially dense material, the K702 still holds its own.
