Surprisingly good.
I bought this amp a couple of weeks ago, we're still closed down for COVID 19 where I live so I haven't used it at club volume yet but judging from at-home tinkering, its got plenty of volume. I have a silver face deluxe reverb and a reissue to compare this to and really, I'm surprised at how accurately Fender reproduced that punchy sound that's unique to the deluxe reverb. They've added a couple of, shall we say, quirky features. It has a "mute" switch where the standby switch would normally be, even though there's no need for standby on a solid state amp. The mute switch feels flimsy compared to the power switch, I'll probably just leave that on all the time. Time will tell how it holds up. Even though Fender doesn't mention it in the literature, they've made a fake warm-up, as if the tubes were powering up, except there are no tubes. There is a 10 or 15 second delay between turning it on to sound coming out. I don't understand the reasoning behind the fake warm-up but OK, it doesn't hurt anything. The amp has 100 watts, it take more solid state watts to replicate the tube sound and performance and again, it really sounds a lot like the traditional tube amp. On the back panel is a sort-of power attenuator that's got six settings labeled from 0.2 watts to full / 22 watts. The labeling doesn't have anything to do with the actual power output, I guess it has to do with keeping the 22 watt tube vibe. The attenuator is actually quite useful. The lowest setting is great for in-home practice and the other settings are much louder but let it break up at lower volumes until you hit full power which sounds like it's louder and cleaner with more headroom than the tube versions. Overall, I'm happier with this purchase than I thought I'd be. The amp is light and easy to carry, no tubes to go bad in the middle of a gig, great practice amp and I expect it will perform well at club volume when and if we ever get back to that.

Temper expectations
After seeing all the 5 star reviews I had to go check this amp out. I went to GC to put it through its paces and spent a good hour with the amp. I took my own guitar to eliminate any variables in the testing. The amp is lightweight. Loading in to a gig would be a breeze. The sound quality and feel of the amp is great. Punchy, but with the noted compression on lower notes and overdriven territory of the dial. The Vibrato (read: Tremolo) is dare I say, warmer and with a better fidelity than my own Fender amp. Really pretty sounding and with the warmth of a comfortable blanket on a cold morning. Really well done job there Fender. Now for the Cons...The mute switch doesn't feel solid at all. It feels like after a few flicks, it is going to fail. Seems like some planned obsolescence. And the bigger con, the reverb. I've heard the sound recordings, I've read reviews on how amazing it sounds, etc... In my experience, reality didn't align with the mythology. It sounds just ok. I've tried quite a few digital emulations of spring reverb and to my ear, the True Spring by Source Audio comes much closer to a true emulation of the spring. For all that time and money that Fender keeps advertising that they spent emulating a spring reverb, the results don't seem to justify the costs. Spring pans are not particularly heavy, are easily replaceable (an ape with a screwdriver could do it), and are fairly reliable. For the life of me, I can't figure out why they didn't just include a pan in it and call it good. Would have sounded better, and would have been cheaper for them to incorporate and less work on their part. If they would have done it this way, there would be pretty much zero reason to get the tube version because this would be close to a perfect gigging amp with the weight reduction, xlr out, and killer fidelity, at a cheaper price. I'd still recommend it for the benefits of the amp but, bring a reverb pedal.

The best amp I ever played.

This amp is incredible. Having owned and played a Fender Pro Reverb tube amp I can tell you that this new amp is actually better than the tube version. What it lacks that the tube version has is tubes that either die, or loose tone due to age, turn the amp into a small room warmer and the weight of the transformers that tubes require. It has the a great sound and responsive feel and the ability to run at lower watt levels so it can be driven into a tube type overdrive without the need for ear plugs. It is a great DI feature so it can be recorded without a mic. It fits really nicely under our main desk in our control room.
Excellent amp!

Excellent take on a classic with many usable features for gigging and recording. Had an early reissue with tubes and this amp resembles it close enough for me!
Great tone, convenient for hauling around.

I primarily use my Tone Master DeLuxe Reverb at home, but when I do take it somewhere else I really like the light weight. I believe the tone is very good for a solid-state amp.
Overpriced, but still good.

Lighter than the Blues Jr. I traded for it. To my old ears, sounds the same. Can get really loud. Not quite as clean on the effects input as my Katana 100, but very close. Could have put it in a smaller case.

I was very reluctant to buy the Tone Master. I've been a tube amp fanatic for years, but I'm 52 years old and the thought of another heavy tube amp just didn't sit well. Did some research and heard rave reviews from several great musicians, I bought it. Very happy with it!

Making art isn't about convenience, there are always trade offs for convenience. Im fairly sensitive to Class D amps with Neo speakers. Not sure if its a frequency above the human hearing that is messing with me but something about this amp sucks the life out of me. No doubt it serves its purpose really well, however it does not effect me on an emotional level the same as a well tuned tube amp. Many people love these as well as other DI style rigs but to me they create a very odd sonic environment. It's almost like The Matrix film, all the right notes are simulated yet its hard to really find joy while plugged in, and for reasons you can't describe. I can play my Hotrod Deluxe for hours and really enjoy myself but after 20 minutes with this amp my ears are asking for a break. But again, on the surface it sounds really good and I don't know why.

Can you use the OBEL on the guitar thru this amp
Not directly—the Fender Tone Master Deluxe Reverb does not have an effects loop, which is necessary for OBEL to work as intended.submitteda year ago
