Geezer Butler at DR Strings Booth Winter NAMM 2013

Description
The DR Strings Black Beauties Medium 4-String Bass Strings deliver the signature bright tone and clarity DR is known for, now with an ultrathin stealth coating. Since 1989, DR Strings has been devoted to crafting handmade instrument strings using innovative materials and coatings. Their commitment to excellence has garnered a loyal following of world-class bassists and guitarists. The DR Extra-Life Black Beauties bass strings provide the crisp tone, clarity and volume of DR's traditional handmade strings, with the added benefit of a super-thin coating on the plain strings and wrap wire that extends string life. As the name suggests, DR's Extra-Life Black Beauties have a sleek black coating for a covert look.
Round Core and Stainless-Steel Wrap for Articulate Brightness
At the core of the Black Beauties full, articulate tone is a round core wire and stainless-steel wrap wire. The stainless-steel wrap maintains brightness and responsive feel. All strings in the set feature DR's K3TM ultrahard coating in jet black, which delivers longer string life, more projection, fewer unwanted overtones and outstanding clarity.
Fast, Smooth Playability
Black Beauties are the latest in coated bass string technology. The wire is pre-coated in black before winding for maximum life and protection. DR Black Beauties are fast and smooth, with a slick feel ideal for rapid bass lines and complex finger work.
Versatile Tones for Any Genre
The balanced gauge set of 45, 65, 85 and 105 provides a versatile tone palette for any music genre. Roll off the tone for a warm, vintage thump or turn up the treble for an aggressive rock growl with singing highs. Black Beauties full frequency response and ample string tension make them a solid choice for 4-string bassists dropping the low E to D as well.
Premium Components, Superior Construction
Like all DR Strings, Black Beauties are crafted using superior materials and handmade with old-world craftsmanship. Plain steel cores are drawn to precise tolerances for consistent tone, feel and intonation. Stainless-steel wrap wire is tightly wound onto the core using a proprietary wrap ratio and years of string-making expertise. The result is a premium set of bass strings with a peerless combination of tone, feel and longevity.

I received these strings for Christmas 2006 and they are absolutely phenomenal. With a deep earthy tone and they just make the low end sound so full. My only problem is the fact that the coating near the bottom of the strings come off rather easily.

I would not recommend
I am a big fan of DR products, don't get me wrong, but this does not match their rep at all. I have been a big fan of the DR high beams on my Spector euro bass and Fender jazz bass, and thought i'd try these for a little experimenting, and i went so wrong. I'm not the biggest fan of the neon's by DR, and these are like those, but suck a lot of your tone. Other reviews i had read said they were a lot smoother than the neons, and i would highly disagree with that.

#sweepstakes I picked up a used acoustic bass that NEEDED strings, but the location I was at didn't have any acoustic bass strings that weren't for long scale. I grabbed these as a stop-gap and I was pleasantly surprised how they maintained warmth and stayed brght on an acoustic.

This is my second set of Black Beauty strings. These aren't just cheap strings coated in black. They're actually Hi Beams, and the windings are coated before being wrapped around the core. The texture is very different but smooth. They sound like an old set of stainless steel strings, but they don't sound dead. I love that the strings are extra long, I was able to run them through the body, and still have about 7" of string past the g-string tuner on my Fender. After measuring and trimming, I was left with a clean and consistent 3 wraps around every tuner. Black strings look great on rosewood.
Sounds good.

Would these work well on an acoustic bass? I don't play it a ton, and the bronzes tear up my fingers. I usually play with an amp so loudness isn't that important.
They will "work". They will produce sound, but not a very good one; Flat wounds, on an acoustic, will be extremely dull - very limited in the tone dept. There is not much resonance for a top wood to resonate from with flat wounds.submitted5 years ago
