DR Strings

collapse expand iconDescription

DRs EXTRA-Life Black Beauties offer guitar players a superior black coated string without sacrificing the crisp tone, clarity, and volume of traditional DR HandMade Strings. EXTRA-Life is a super thin advanced .0003" coating on the plain electric guitar strings and on the wrap wire for added protection.

DR's remarkable, and proprietary, patent pending K3T Technology Coating is the first coating that makes no apologies and no excuses. Players say these strings have less unwanted overtones, more volume, great clarity and articulation than standard uncoated strings. Yet, they provide the same protection against corrosion due to humidity and perspiration as well as the increased tonal life coated strings have come to be known for.

Beauty and a beast

I can honestly say that I have been playing DR strings for 4 years and would never think of trying a different brand. With these you have a killer sound and even more killer looks. I have a white Ibanez that has this set of strings on it and it is definatly a attention grabber. A+ for DR!

Neat idea, but the coating comes off

I bought a set because I really like DR stings, and I thought the black coated strings would give an interesting look to my guitar. I put them on last night. The strings sound fine, and they seem to hold tune, but the coating started coming off the unwound strings as soon as I started playing. After less than two hours, the coating has come off the unwound strings at both the picking and fretting ends. Little flakes of the black coating are now stuck to the body of my guitar. They sound fine, but given that the entire point of these strings is the special, black coating... I can only give two stars.

I love people's reactions when they see these strings. The coating does not alter the tone and these last a long time if you keep them clean.

They look cool and sound great. When you play a lot you know to replace them when the coating starts wearing through. I do recommend a good string cleaner regardless of the strings that you are using.

I had seen these for awhile and decided to check them out for myself and was pleasantly surprised. Now in store, the gauges don't go any thicker than.46 . I Personally don't play on anything below .50 but these work really well. DR are very happy to make you your own custom strings if you go to their site and email their contact. I plan on doing a review on that as well pretty soon too. The coating on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd strings come off pretty easily, so you may need to clean your guitar a bit after playing. The coatings also feel really slick so I can slide fairly easy on all the strings with little effort. I'd recommend these if you want some quality strings that also look really good. More than just a gimmick.

Sounds great for ballads. Offers softer tones with that coating, feels good on the fingers. So far I dont have anything bad to say about them.
