Dunlop Echoplex Delay Guitar Effects Pedal

Dunlop

collapse expand iconDescription

The Echoplex EP-3 tape echo unit is famous for its deliciously warm, organic modulation and sweet musical voice—a key component to some of the most iconic guitar tones from the ’60s and ’70s. The original EP-3 units, however, are expensive, temperamental and larger than a VCR.

That’s where the EP103 Echoplex delay effects pedal comes in. It’s the size of a Phase 90, and it delivers the EP-3’s legendary tones with a simple control interface and a hi-fi all-analog dry path. The Delay control sets the time between repeats—from 4 to 750ms—the Sustain control sets the number of repeats, and the Volume control sets the output level of your repeats. Where the sound of this pedal really shines, though, is in Age mode.

By default, your pedal performs as a perfectly-calibrated, factory-fresh tape echo machine would— bright and clear tape with subtle wow and flutter modulation. A quick push of the Volume knob lets you “age” the sound of your repeats, darkening the tone, upping the tape saturation (distortion), and increasing modulation and tape distress as you turn the knob clockwise.

The EP103 Echoplex delay also features tap tempo functionality, for up to four seconds of delay time, when you hook up an M199 MXR Tap Tempo Switch. The dry path is all analog with Constant Headroom Technology—providing a full 20 volts of headroom—and a choice of true relay or trails bypass. The EP103 can be set for 100% wet mode along with stereo input and output modes. No tape cartridges are required.

This pedal is deceptively versatile, performing way above its price point. Three knobs, glorious, wide-ranging sound, awesome tape aging function, slight chorus nuance that will make me forget to engage a chorus pedal. Just buy this- it's amazing!

It really sounds so much better than the Carbon Copy delay I had, and liked. This just blows it away, though.

  • The only delay you need.

I don't often write reviews but I felt compelled to say how good this thing is. Like many guitar players I've owned and sold a good amount of delay pedals, always been one to enjoy a purely good sounding delay without many bells and whistles and this is def one. I was on the fence whether I wanted to go with this the wampler or catalinbread. Had the opportunity to try the other 2 in store but not this one. Went out on a limb and ordered it because the simplicity of the dials was attractive, that and many people said it was the most purest sounding tape echo replicating the original echoplex. Just gotta say wow, when I got it I was playing with this for hours, it's such a beautiful and inspiring sounding pedal, the repeats are amazingly clean and warm, sounds warmer than analog pedals I've owned even though it's digital. As I said I'm not one for many bels and whistles and this pedal is def a bare bones with not many features, but it dosent need to be, the sound of this thing will trump that. I this is the second delay pedal I've owned where I really feel like it's a keeper I'll be holding onto the first being a carbon copy but this thing sounds way better.
