EMG

collapse expand iconDescription

EMG Pickups, along with legendary artist Geezer Butler, have collaborated to develop the GZR-P and GZR-PJ signature bass sets. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bass player started working with EMG founder Rob Turner in 2011, looking to find the classic bass tone he had in Black Sabbath's early days. As Geezer and Black Sabbath moved from studio to touring in 2013, the final component of getting the classic Geezer tone was in play, the rigors of a world tour.

To recapture Geezer's early Black Sabbath tone, it meant a new EMG vintage-style passive P & PJ design with a few modern touches. The all solderless P set uses Alnico 5 pole pieces and custom-wound coils for just the right amount of punch and grit. The J (PJ set) also uses Alnico 5 poles and features two custom-wound split-coils that both eliminate the noise and hum usually associated with early '70s bass pickups and allow for more power and volume than any other standard single-coil J, giving this set remarkable balance between the P & J. The result is unmistakable early Geezer Butler bass tone with deep, tight low end that you can hear on "Iron Man," "War Pigs" and "Paranoid." Said Geezer, "I never felt comfortable giving my name to any other pickups, but this time these have blown me away."

I was going to buy a new bass, but none of the basses I tried was doing it for me, so I bought these to upgrade the sound on my Yamaha PJ. Excellent tone and easy to install. Don't bother taking these to a guitar shop to have them install it. I did it myself with a pair of pliers and a Swiss Army Knife. It took an hour and a half because I had never done anything like it before. The pickups themselves are heavy, which is good because it makes you feel like you got your money's worth out of them. The connections are incredibly easy to put together. The hardest part of installation was finding something to prop them up at the correct height. (I just pulled the foam off the back of the stock pickups.) A word of warning to any newbies. When the instructions say to pull out all the original wiring, they are not telling the truth. See that little wire disappearing through its own little hole to nowhere? That's the bridge ground wire. Don't pull it out. (Personal experience. It's easy to put it back in, but still a pain to have to take the bridge off.) Other than that, the installation was a breeze.

A friend recommended I try these pickups for the bass I was building and I am extremely glad I listened. EMG's solderless connections are genius, putting it all together was a breeze. Once everything was live, I plugged in and was blown away by the tone. Phenomenal. Instinct had me try "War Pigs" first. The tone of the P-pickup is classic Sabbath, while combining that with the J really fills out the sound for a full, rich tone that I absolutely love. Amazing punch from a passive pickup. Even if you're not a huge Black Sabbath fan, these pickups stand-out from the rest. I cannot recommend them enough.

Okay, so first off, these sound great. Very vintage, punchy and loud. Nice upgrade, totally worth it. But, installation was an something of an ordeal (caused, no doubt by my inexperience with replying pickups). My Squier VM P/J has a barrel jack. So you have to solder. Already disappointed. Try to do so and fail miserably, have second degree burns to prove it. Take to local GC, and am told it's $30 for one solder. So what. right? I paid it. Get home, plug-in at low volume and -- nothing. Go back to GC and ask the tech what's up. He swears he opened it, installed and tested them. Plugs-in, moment of truth. Faint sound from a big stack. Has to crawl the volume juts to get a moderate sound. Says I'm good to go. The pickups were set too low. Way too low. I don't expect a set-up for my $30, but come on. Go to raise the pickups, no foam or springs included. Use a kitchen sponge that I cut. Finally good to go. And, as I said, totally worth it.
