EHX BASS BALLS NANO - GEAR UP

Electro-Harmonix

collapse expand iconDescription

The Electro Harmonix Nano Bassballs Twin Envelope Filter Effects Pedal has everything you loved about the original Bassballs in a pocket size. The human vocal-like sound of its two sweeping filters gives bass a strong presence under leads, or a commanding quality when out front. The resonant frequencies are engineered solidly into the full range of the bass guitar's strongest harmonics. Bassballs will respond to every bass note. The sweep is widely variable, and harmonic enrichment is available with the distortion switch.

The Nano Bassballs comes in a small, die-cast case with rounded corners, saving valuable pedalboard space. The footswitch selects your original signal or the filtered signal as the Bassballs output. The range of the filters upward sweep in pitch is set by the interaction of instrument volume and the sensitivity control. Both stronger attacks and higher (clockwise) control settings increase the sweep range. Low volume and low sensitivity settings will create little or no sweep, and Bassballs will only provide a small boost in its lowest frequencies. In its upward position, the fuzz switch introduces additional harmonic enrichment that accentuates the filters action. The sensitivity pot also serves as a volume control for the fuzz, also increasing in the clockwise direction.

Never used this type of effect before. It offers a nifty sound to add depth to the overall experience. Reminds me of a good phaser pedal I used to have. Like every EHX pedal I've owned, it does what it says and doesn't overwhelm, even when you crank it up. A keeper.

If you know the Bassballs sound this will work fine for you with some differences. Having used old school Bassballs in the past, this unit gives you most of the old dependable bassballs sound but it does not seem quite as flexible as the older unit. I love the sound that it gives but the HF harmonics seem a bit more difficult to control and get a good balance with the lower tones. So you do have to be a bit more careful how you use it or it will get a bit overbearing. The other issue is that for some reason it drops my signal level more than I would expect. I'm using a power adapter so it is not an issue with low battery. But I am also using a passive bass and could just require me to tweak the EQ more. Overall very happy with it nothing like the sound of a Bassballs.

  • If you can find a tone that works then its a great value

Pretty limited in tones you can find with this. If it works for you, that's great. I just couldn't get the sound I was after so I returned it and went with MXR M82 for twice the $. For value its sturdy, pretty quiet and the range of tones that are available are good.

I was looking for a pedal to give me that classic funky envelope filter sound. I tried several other pedals, with no success. I received this pedal hours before a gig, and actually opened it at the gig and tested it live during a show... It will NEVER leave my gig bag again. IT IS AWESOME. I am planning to buy another one to have as a spare that i can leave in the studio for recording and fooling around. GREAT PEDAL!

At first I was not bonding with this pedal, but after tweaking the two trim pots inside I was able to dial in a pedal that will live on my board forever, I use this pedal along with the blurst as my filter section, I love the synth sounds I get and when I want to mellow out my solid gold fx Sasori by smoothing out some of the teeth on my saw fuzz its sounds great!!! Love it but I would say open it up and tweak those trim pots!!!
