Electro-Harmonix

collapse expand iconDescription

With original late-'70s Op-Amp Big Muff effects pedals commanding exorbitant prices, Mike Matthews decided to take the power to the people and reissue the classic pedal at a price players could afford. The circuitry of the Op-Amp Big Muff fuzz effects—sometimes also referred to as the IC or V4 Big Muff—has been faithfully recreated while several practical enhancements have been added, including a compact, die-cast chassis and true-bypass switching.

The pedal relies on op-amps rather than transistors and three gain stages rather than four to create its signature sound. The original Op-Amp Big Muff has many devotees, including Billy Corgan, who made use of it extensively on the Smashing Pumpkins’ 1993 album Siamese Dream. After playing the new reissue, Corgan said: “The magic’s still in the box. I can still get what I’m looking for!”

Siamese Dream

It is the real deal. All you need is a Mu-tron Bi-phase and you have THE sound. However, it was difficult to get away from the novelty of it and tweek it to an original tone that didn't make me sound like a Corgan wanna-be. I was able to combine some plate reverb and the caltalinbread belle epoch deluxe (EP-3) and get some great Shoegaze/spacey sounds. It is really a lot of fun.

Good idea, it's just too noisy. Will return.

I wanted to love this pedal, but it's just too noisy.

I was looking for the Siamese Dream thing and I got it. It's good for more than that too. I'm having fun stacking it with other pedals. What a great circuit.

This is THE ONE, this is THE fuzz pedal, THE Big Muff. These reissues are just great and this one is my personal unicorn. I'm a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan, and I'll never forget listening to Siamese Dream for the first time when I was a kid. Now I can replicate the sounds I love. #sweepstakes

It can make you sound like the Smashing Pumpkins, but that is just the jumping off point Experimenting with stacking heavier distortion and other FX (delay, revrb etc) from the amp with this pedal resulted in amazing, versatile sound. Make this pedal yours, it is practically begging for it.

  • Great fuzz/distortion
