The Epiphone EL-00 Acoustic

Epiphone

collapse expand iconDescription

The Epiphone L-00 Studio acoustic-electric guitar is a direct descendent of Epiphone's original line of flattops which go back to the Golden Age of acoustic guitars, the 1930s. This smaller "parlor" or "blues box" style acoustic guitar is favored by blues players of all eras for its compressed, woody tonal quality, short scale and comfortable weight. The combination makes it ideal for fingerpicking or the bark of a bottle neck slide. It features a select mahogany body with solid spruce top, rosewood bridge and mahogany neck, again, a mixture of tonewoods that'll fit right in the blues pocket.

Now featuring the Fishman Sonitone soundhole preamp and Fishman Sonicore pickup, the L-00 Studio acoustic-electric can be plugged-in and heard on any size stage with first-class acoustic/electric sound. The pickup is set underneath the saddle. The Sonitone soundhole preamp is an active preamp mounted in the soundhole with easy-to-access mounted rotary controls for Master Volume and Tone adjustment. Now you can make your adjustments during soundcheck and even fine adjustments on-the-fly during your set. No more running back and forth to your amp or the soundboard. The active preamp is powered by a single 9-volt battery. You can connect your Epiphone L-00 Studio to a PA or amp of your choice with a standard 1/4" instrument cable.

The L-00 Studio acoustic-electric features a solid spruce top with 3-ply black and white binding. The solid spruce top will improve in tone as it ages. The more you play it, the better it will sound. The body features select mahogany with single-ply white binding on the back. The mahogany neck and body combined with the solid spruce top make for the perfect combination of tone, warmth and brilliance with a bigger sound than you would expect from a smaller-sized guitar.

The smaller body (15.5" wide at lower bout) and straight rosewood bridge also influence the L-00 Studio's distinctive voice which is more focused than a dreadnought and perfect for singers. The rosewood bridge features a compensated imitation bone saddle. The 24.75" scale select mahogany neck has a SlimTaper D profile with a 1.68" nut and is set with a hand-fitted dovetail neck joint using premium Titebond glue. The rosewood fingerboard has a 12" radius, single-ply black binding, 19 medium frets, and pearloid dot inlays. The tortoise shell style pickguard has a vintage metal "E" and the L-00 Studio has a Vintage Sunburst color finish.

This special guitar also features Epiphone's no-nonsense quality including nickel hardware, strap buttons, a 1/4" endpin, Grover 14:1 machine heads with mini-buttons, D'Addario Phosphor (12-53) strings, and carries a Limited Lifetime Warranty against defects in materials or workmanship.

Walking around a guitarcenter, I spent three hours playing every acoustic guitar there. I picked this up after playing everything from fullsized, parlors, D16, breedloves, seagulls, fenders, yamahas and even martins...Wow. I was stunned by the sound. This is isn't a parlor. The rear tail end of the box is fatter. The sound is blues(y) and rich. I was absolutely stunned, I'm not a epiphone fan either...in fact, I'm far the opposite. The fishman sonitone pickup is meh...makes it sound like a clean electric guitar...you don't get any 'acoustic' sound. Not a dealbreaker, and not why I bought this in the least. That room filling sound and tone which will sell this guitar...hands down. Not as loud as a full sized dread, but wasn't meant to be. Just fine for a small coffee house sized venue or at home practicing on the couch. Comfy and light, handy and unobtrusive. I was looking for a sub-1000 guitar. Action is low and slick. The finish has zero blemishes. Frets are level and perfect. I walked away from martins in the platinum room because this sounded better! You can special order the fitted case for this, I can completely recommend it. It's brown and black two tone with a very fluffy and plush interior. It has four locks rather than just three. It comes with a key and will lock unlike both my martin cases. It's really heavy for a case and that can be good or bad depending on how you look at it.

  • Just received it. Great Guitar for the money!

I just received it and I have to say that Epiphone is getting very good at making lower price guitars. This one feels good right from the box. I will change the strings but other than that it's ready to go.

I had been looking for an a/e, had plenty of hand me downs, they all filled the bill for awhile - until I realized they didn't have the sound I was looking for - looked at the high dollar parlor types (that's all I could do was look) then I started reading about this guitar & heard plenty good about even from Gibson & Fender owners, both had good things to say. Finally got my hands on one and I was not disappointed, that sound came out, a little light right now, was just what I was looking for & knowing with age it will only getting better, fantastic. Right out of the box the action was nice & low, agree with everyone else about the nut, bridge & strings about changing them out, going to just play it for awhile first. Plugged in just brings a smile to my face, need to grab you one. I have to give a word of thanks to a couple of guys at the GC in Bartlett, Josh for the great deal he gave me and Hunter who helped me after the sale, both great guys & know what they're doing.

  • I really like this guitar, it's a terrific deal for the money, well made and great sounding.

I've been looking for a good, playable, affordable blues guitar, similar in profile and sound to a prewar Gibson L00 or Kalamazoo KG-14. I think I found it! I picked this thing up yesterday and have just about worn my callouses off since then playing it. It has great, balanced tone: tauter and tighter than a dreadnought or concert sized guitar, but with great volume. It can be heard over my hollering, even without amping. The finish is lovely, the intonation and action are dead on. I bought it with the intention of replacing the nut and saddle with bone, but it's so nice right off the shelf that I doubt I'm going to mess with it. Great tuners, neck is true and clean feeling. I do plan on trying out some nickel alloy Monel strings on there, to see if the tone gets closer to the pre-war blues boxes. But this little guitar is a really fine piece, and a whole lot of fun. Why anybody would spend sky-high bread on a Gibson when they can get an Epiphone with 98% of what's real for a tenth of the price is beyond me.

I would have givin it 5 stars but it has plastic nut, saddle,& pins and it makes this guitar sound pretty thin but after swapping out the plastics for bone and restringing w .11"s it is now a very nice playable 00 guitar Also the neck is pretty narrow so if you have big hands it can get pretty tight at the first three frets. If Epiphone would change these shortcommings this would be a first class little parlor guitar. If you are looking for a first guitar this one may not be for you unless you are willing to spend additional money to set it up and replace the substandard parts.....

I bought a EL-00 pro a few months ago, played it a few times. Last week I plugged it in for a show, and only the treble strings picked up, no bass at all. I realize this model was discontinued, but it should have worked.
