Description
Les Paul Special Main Features
Mahogany body with gloss finishMahogany neck with a ’50s vintage profile, Indian laurel fretboard
Dual soap bar Pro P-90 pickups with dual volume and tone pots
Nickel-plated Lightning Bar wraparound bridge, Vintage Deluxe tuners with ivory buttons
Body Construction
Mahogany has been the standard wood for the Les Paul Special since 1955. As a tonewood, it has a strong midrange, which makes it an ideal platform for P-90s.Les Paul Special Neck Construction
The Special has a set mahogany neck with a vintage ’50’s profile; the Indian laurel fretboard has 12" radius—a familiar feel for fans of classic Gibson electrics. The updated headstock bears a closer resemblance to the Gibson design.Soap Bar Pro P-90 Pickups
This Les Paul Special has two soapbar Pro P-90 single-coils, made to match Gibson’s original specifications. This includes Elektrisola magnet wire, sand cast Alnico V magnets and tin-plated brass base plates. Voiced for rhythm and lead, they provide a wealth of vintage tones that work equally well in a modern context. The dual volume and tone controls use CTS pots for a smooth and accurate response.Vintage-Style Hardware
The bridge on the Les Paul Special is a Lightning Bar wraparound with compensated saddles. Once modern concession: it's designed for an unwound G-string, unlike original models. Epiphone Deluxe Vintage tuners with Ivory buttons complete the classic look of the Special.Other high-quality specifications include a 5-ply pickguard, a Graph Tech nut, cream single-ply binding on the fretboard and a Modern Epiphone logo inlayed with mother of pearl on the headstock.

WOW. The good press was right.
I am a Experienced closet guitarist that enjoys the noises I can make with guitars and play songs that I've always liked and have them sound halfway decent. I also own several other Epiphone guitars (Les Paul Custom Pro, Wilshire Pro, and a couple other guitars along the way) I like Epiphone because for me, I find high value in how they make me feel when I play and the tones I can get for a very reasonable entry point. I also feel I can tinker and mod and not effect the value except for my own pleasure to tinker. But WOW, the feel of this guitar is excellent. I'm blown away by the resonance of this guitar. On arrival I believe the guitar is probably the most solid for the price that I have invested in yet and fit to leave alone. It is solid, but does not appear as heavy as my Custom, but feels just as chunky and nearly as thick as well! I did make a couple changes, I had previously last year I bought the Les Paul Special II TV yellow in effort to get "close enough" to what I thought this guitar was. Not even close now that I've had both in my hand, although I will say even the Les Paul Special II looked great and sounded great for that price too! But it is no comparison, this Les Paul Special feels way more expensive than it cost, it is solid and for mine, the fit and finish was very good out of the box. Upon receiving I did set it up, cleaned fret board, swapped strings and adjusted intonation. Also took the tuners and bridge I added to my Les Paul Special II ( Grover Deluxe Keystone tuners and a fatter wrap bridge with ability to intonate more precisely.) That said, out of the box with initial tuning the stock stuff was just as solid. Just my preference. If you're in the market and love P90's and want a solid Les Paul cut, for me this could slide into pole position as favorite in my closet. And I have a special bond with my Custom Pro! I would buy it again and glad I pulled the trigger even though I don't really need any more guitars. hahha!

TV Yellow same as Gibson, Pickups Excellent, Frets not level
The key is to get one that doesn't need fret leveling otherwise the cost of entry is too high. If you can't do fret leveling yourself then you will likely be paying at least half the cost of the guitar to make it playable. I bought two from different stores. One showed up with the truss rod moving up and down inside the neck, so that one was returned. This one that was left looked fine until you looked closer, the rounding of the body edge is uneven, you wouldn't notice unless you were checking. The end of the neck that is closet to the neck pickup has unfinished wood, though it is so thin no one can see it unless they are uncomfortably close to the body of the guitar. There are paint beads on either side of the neck where it meets the body, again I see it, but not noticeable without being very close to the guitar. The major problem is the frets are not level and even after a pro setup the guitar still wasn't playable. I know how to level my frets and while I hate that I have to spend time doing it I'm not out more money just some of my time. I have purchased two Squier Bullets with better frets than this and the cost of those two guitars together are less than this one. I love that the neck is bound, that gives it a really good classy look. People have complained about the look of the TV Yellow, however I held it up to the Gibson version in the Guitar Center store and can't tell the difference. I can see the grain through the paint, but the audience may not be able to. The pickups are good and the electronics are good so far. Tuners are fine, though I would prefer something that had finer tuning, really easy to go too far too quickly. I was nervous about this bridge and intonation. The strings are accurate intonated, though the A seems a little flat sometimes, not off by much. I'm less excited about it now that I have it and found that you get what you pay for. It is cool though and I plan to keep it.

I held off buying this until June 2025, because I was unsure about the P-90s sound, and the potential noise they might produce. The pickups are no noisier than my Strat or Tele. It's a REALLY good guitar, played great right out of the box, and really doesn't need any mods. The only change I made was a personal preference — I lowered the bridge a bit. Considering that it has that less adjustable compensated bridge, I was pleasantly surprised how spot-on the intonation is, all the way up and down the neck, even after adjusting the bridge height and replacing the stock strings with a slightly lower gauge set (9.5 to .44 D'Addadrio XLs). The fit and finish is flawless on mine. I did find the neck a little chunky; it's not my preferred neck profile, but it's still comfortable to play. And the fact that I got this NEW for under $500 at Guitar Center in Brooklyn is quite astounding for a guitar of this quality.
Wow, very impressive for an Epiphone.

Obviously needed a professional setup straight out of the box, the action was quite high and the electronics were a bit dirty. Other than that, I love the sound, it's an amazing guitar that i'll be holding onto forever and probably passing on to my son.
Great sound

The neck is a little chunky, but that's fine if you have big hands

I just picked up a used one of these yesterday. The reason I'm writing a review on the new ones is simple, any of the little issues you may run into can be corrected. My example is easily the best Epiphone I have ever played. It's resonant, stays in tune, plays exceptionally and sounds rad through my rig. I play Gibson's and have a couple custom made guitars and this Epiphone holds up against them. I typically hate poly finishes but they figured out how to apply it thin and allow the guitar to breathe. The color is almost Gibson correct as well. I don't get it. I didn't want to like this thing. I was just noodling around at my local GC to kill time while the staff were getting my order together and it walked out with me. I didn't want to play a "nice" guitar because I didn't want to like what I was playing enough to think about buying it. Well, guess what? Not all wood is created equal so there may be duds, but go buy one. Spend a little time setting it up and you'll thank me.
Yes, Well Done Epiphone!

I love this guitar, it plays like a champ! Played great right out of the box. Nice fat neck and good electronics. The hardware holds up well and the tuners keep tune. It sounds good through my Vox AC30, Marshall Origin 50 and my Orange OR15. The only con (and it's not even that big a deal) is the color. It's more of a mustard than TV yellow. At one point I had thought about replacing the pickups with something different, but every time I play it, I never see the need. Epiphone did a good job on this model.
I would buy this again great guitar
