best bass for the buck!
Wow! I have been playing double bass for six years, and bass guitar for three, and may I say, that this bass is the best of both worlds! It has two, sweet humbuckers, that with a little judicial use of messing with your tone, can go from a warm, smooth, low-end groove, to crystalline highs for a funky snap! Because of it's semi-hollow construction, it is very light, and good to go for hours of playing; this style of build also adds that rich, acoustic bass flavor to your sound! The neck is very fast, with a very nice, thin profile so jumping from note-to-note just got that much easier! And because of the short scale, you can really fly on this bass with massive octave working. The finish is beautiful and I could not be happier. Buy one today, it's worth every penny and more!

TRIED IT OUT ONLY
I tried this bass out and immediately put it back down. I thought the bass had a treble-like and distorted sound. But some other people loved it on here, so try it out to see if you like it.

Got it for a great price on a Guitar Center special discount day, and a few more dollars on my card discount. I'm a lefty, and quite new to playing bass. After looking over this bass, I saw that I could convert it to left handed with few problems. Over the years I've found that Epiphone has some of the best built instruments in the lower to mid range price points, and they hit the mark with this bass. I ordered a left hand nut, but received a right hand one, so I think I will have to cut one myself. I simply turned the existing nut around, which works O.K. for now. There is a higher fret wire at the top of the first fret where the strings rest on. I really like the floating bridge design. it's got slots in the top piece with small pieces of fret wire for the strings to rest on, making it so you can adjust the strings individually without having to change the alignment of the bridge. So the way the first fret, and the bridge work together made getting intonation correct quite easy, after re-stringing left handed. The controls are simple, and fairly low to the body, another plus for lefty's. The tuning keys are solid, and accurate. The sunburst color, and finish is quite nice. I like the tone of this bass, and consider it good, with the potential for improvement, as I learn to set up a bass a little bit better. I am using a keyboard amp to play through. A decent bass practice amp will definitely bring out the overall quality in tone this bass is capable, and deserving of. There are quite a few basses for less, but I think this bass is a much higher quality than most in that category. I would definitely recommend this bass as a starting point if you are new to bass guitar, as a student instrument, and willbe using it while gigging, and home recording. I can tell already, I'll be able to keep this instrument for quite awhile, before thinking of upgrading.

I recently purchased my Epiphone Viola Bass and found it so easy to play. It's a short scale, passive bass that sits comfortably on my leg. I also purchased a Peavey Bass amp that has a built in tuner!
Beautiful!

An interesting short scale bass

I did not buy the bass but I was trying it out not to long ago because I'm looking for my first solid bass. Or one that'll be a keeper and a step up from my Epiphone EB-0. I wasn't terribly impressed with the hofner ignition sound wise I grabbed this Epiphone bass and ran it through an Ampeg combo. I'm a smaller guy and the short scale fits naturally on me. First thing I checked was the sound. A nice trebly sound with the muddiness of short scale. I checked the tone control for each pickup. There is a noticeable difference when the knob is at 0, 5 and 10 for both pickups. This is what I look for with bass tone controls! The electronics are fine no scratch sounds. And the if you mess with the volume knobs you get a variety of tones surprisingly! If I bought it, I'd put Labella flats on it. I'm a flats guy! Compared to the mudbucker on my two Epiphones (An EB-0 and EB-3) you get much more tonal variety with these mini humbuckers. Your ears will thank you two with about 1/3 the output. I give it five stars because this is the potential Epiphone is meant to be quality wise. The only grip some people may have is there's some neck dive cause it's a hollow body. But it's child's play compared to my EB-3. I wish it had a pickguard thought.
Very good!

No idea how to play Bass but I can play guitar and reading Bass Tabs makes it easier to figure it out! Bought this one because I'm a Beatles fan and wanted a Bass similar to what they played.

I love Epiphones and Gibson guitars and basses. My main concern is the neck. I own sever Les Pauls and the Slim Tapered D neck is perfect for my hand. Curious what the neck is like on this Viola Bass? Fast? Slim? Thanks
It's basically on par with this style of bass, which may be a bit on the bulkier side. If you'd like you can email us at yourvoice@guitarcenter.com and we can have a product specialist reach out to you and help you find the best fit for your needs.submitted6 years ago
