EVANS

collapse expand iconDescription

Hydraulic Glass drum heads from EVANS feature two plies that sandwich a thin layer of oil and give the fat, wet sound that was pioneered in the 70s. The oil decreases sustain and enhances attack and low-end from your toms. This Standard pack includes 12", 13" and 16" heads.

Great replacement for stock resonant heads on my Mapex Mars kit. Love the sound of the hydraulic heads. Plus, saving $25 buying the pre-pack was a good deal.

  • I'm not a fan of the Hydraulics.

These things are really heavy, and thunky. Compared to a medium weight single ply head these sound to me like playing on various sizes of cardboard boxes. Easy to tune? Yes, they are, but then you have to have that thud sound and very limited sustain.

  • Now to find out how great these sound on my current set.

When I first chose a head for my Royce set, I had only chosen blue Evans Hydraulics for the look-they were cool. I later found out that I had made the right choice for that set when I had put Remo's on and HATED the sound. As mentioned by other reviews they are very easy to tune and sound funky, longer. Now the question is: how much will my Mapex Mars kit ROCK with these babies!

If you're looking for tom heads that are durable, powerful, and produce an all-too-familiar "rock" sound, your search ends here. They do not fail to do what's advertised; a low and thunderous boom with minimal sustain and thus easier tuning, as overtones are reduced. My kit is not yet equipped with these marvels, but I've played extensively on some that are. They absolutely blow my mind every time. The most problematic drum in my experience -- the floor tom -- miraculously no longer sounds too tingy or too trashy at various high and low tunings. One final thing that these beauties can do: provide a distinct and uniform tone. Though it is short, this note is not noticeably met with harsh overtones. The resonant head -- a stock head, at that -- does not interfere either. Overall, if the previously described sound is what you're after, give these a try. I am very sure you will not regret it! I am definitely switching soon.
