If you are installing as a "tug-bar"...
I got this and installed it as a "tug-bar" instead of a thumbrest (ala 60's Jazz Bass). The original placement for this piece was below the G string so that you had a place for your fingers while you played with your thumb, which is how bassists who were used to playing double-bass used to do it. It was moved above the E string as a thumb rest in the 70's, and discontinued in the 80's. The only issue with this item is that the template it comes with only shows the placement for the thumbrest, and not the tug-bar. You either have to eye-ball it (there are lots of detailed pictures on the web so it's not too hard), or better yet, get the '62 Jazz Bass pickgaurd which has the tug-bar holes already drilled for you (the pickgaurd works on both american and mexican j-basses). The latter is the better way to go. If you go down the new pickgaurd road, it also has the pickup cover holes pre-drilled too, so you can go all-out and get the metal pickup cover for that total vintage vibe. Either way, you're going to have to break out the drill, so be sparing in how far you go into the body. A quarter inch is all you need.

Expected better quality
I am a guy who has been playing bass poorly for many many years. I have a 90's Jazz Bass that already has the wholes in the pickguard for this rest. So I thought I would give one a try. It is a genuine fender product, as are all parts I have bought for my bass. It is very thin plastic. I expected something more substantial. I have yet to mount it but I'm sure it will serve it's purpose.

I've been working on a complete overhaul/modification of my p-bass. I replaced the standard neck with a Jazz Bass fretless neck. I replaced the standard bridge with a Leo Quon Bad Ass bridge. I installed a Seymour Duncan Vintage Precision pickup in the mid position with a Seymour Duncan Vintage Jazz Bass pickup at the bridge. I installed a crushed pearl pickguard, Jazz Bass knobs, and this thumb rest. The thumb rest is nice to have, and it looks good. Now I just have to decide on whether to install the chrome ashtray bridge cover and the chrome pickup cover.

Standard Fender thumb rest, so doesn't look like some sort of add-on. Nice finish, mounting screw heads match the Fender pickguard screws.
Put on Mustang

Instructions do not cover Mustang bass, but works well. I looked up where it was placed on a Justin Meldal-Johnsen Road Worn bass and located same.
