I use this pickup in an Ovation AL Demiola guitar. I've always had problems with the pickup that was original to the guitar. The Black stack soundhole pickup solved all my problems and it doesn't require batteries.I actually kept the same settings on my fishman preamp pedal. the sound quality of the pickup blows away the original equipment Ovation pickup. I think most people would be pleased with the sound and it's easy to install.

The pickup is low in volume....what pre-amp or booster can I use with this to get a better signal?

No. This is for a steel string guitar since it's a magnetic pickup, you would either need a mic style pickup or a piezo undersaddle style.
