Floyd Rose

collapse expand iconDescription

Floyd Rose continues its legacy of innovation with the surface-mounting FRX Tremolo System for Les Paul, SG and Flying V-style guitars. The FRX is a direct swap for the Tune-O-Matic and stopbar type bridge system, using the existing mounting stud holes and requiring no routing whatsoever.

The locking nut mounts behind your guitar's existing nut, in place of the truss rod cover. The FRX locking nut has mounting holes on the left and right; only two wood screws have to be installed to mount the nut. If your guitar has a lesser headstock angle than the standard 17° which will prevent the strings from seating properly in the existing nut, you will need the FRX Custom Locking Nut with Spacer instead.

*NOTE
1) On some Les Pauls, particularly LP Customs, the neck angle is not sufficient to allow the FRX to work without slight modification to the body. The receiving portion of the spring tension transfer rod on the base plate extends slightly below the bridge and may rest on the body unless a tiny channel is routed.  Please check the bridge measurements before purchasing or attempting installation. Some TOM-style bridges have slight dimensional differences.

2) If you plan on having the bridge in a full-floating mode, it is highly recommend that you keep the nylon trem-assist ball post in place. This piece helps compensate the difference in leverage point on the FRX and the multitude of guitar setups.

The Floyd Rose FRX Tremolo System is designed as a surface-mounted replacement for Tune-O-Matic (TOM) bridge and stopbar tailpiece setups, commonly found on Gibson-style guitars. It utilizes existing mounting stud holes and typically requires no routing, making it an attractive option for adding a tremolo system without significant modifications. However, when considering installation on an Explorer-style body, several factors must be evaluated: Neck Angle and Body Geometry: Explorer models may have varying neck angles and body contours. The FRX system's compatibility depends on these specifications. For instance, some Les Paul Customs with insufficient neck angles require slight body modifications to accommodate the FRX's spring tension transfer rod. Headstock Angle: The FRX locking nut is designed to mount behind the existing nut, replacing the truss rod cover. If your guitar has a headstock angle less than the standard 17°, the strings may not seat properly, necessitating the use of an FRX Custom Locking Nut with Spacer. Bridge and Tailpiece Spacing: While the FRX is intended for TOM and stopbar configurations, variations in bridge and tailpiece spacing across different guitar models may affect installation. It's crucial to verify that your Explorer's measurements align with the FRX's specifications. floydrose.com In summary, while the FRX system is designed for compatibility with TOM-equipped guitars, including some Explorer models, it's essential to assess your specific guitar's neck angle, headstock angle, and bridge/tailpiece spacing. Consulting with a professional guitar technician or luthier can provide clarity on whether the FRX can be installed without significant modifications to your instrument.
