Guitar and bass strings are made of hardened stainless steel or nickel with thicknesses as high as 3mm. Ordinary diagonal cutters are designed for soft copper, and thus fail miserably when used on strings. GrooveTech String Cutters were developed specifically for this application, using a proprietary heat-treatment process. Despite its compact six-inch length, even "B" bass strings cut easily and your days of dented blades will be a thing of the past. Vinyl grips feel great in your hands.

Nice Tool

I am a professed tool nerd, but seriously, every guitar and banjo needs a small tool kit in the case with the instrument. You need a tuner, a cloth of some kind to wipe the instrument off after playing, a small screwdriver to adjust tension on the tuning keys, extra strings, picks, and bridge pins, and a set of nippers like these. The Groove Tech String cutters fit in the accessory box in your guitar case and take up very little space. They cut off the protruding ends of guitar strings cleanly with one squeeze. These nippers have a spring that keeps the jaws open at rest, and they open when you relax your hand after cutting. This feature is not necessary and cutting tools in general are best stored with the sharp edges protected, but in this case it is not a big deal. I'm sure these would work just as well for wire-cutting odd jobs around the house, but it's wise to just leave them in your instrument case as dedicated string cutters, so they are there when you need them and they stay sharp. This is a nice tool that does what it's supposed to do with no fuss.

They work but aren't that great

These work but they seem to wear down just as fast as my normal wire cutters that aren't specifically "guitar/bass string cutters". They just seem like normal cutters. But they get the job done.

They are not very big, but they feel quite solid and cut bass strings quite easily. They seem like they will hold up for quite some time unless I recklessly abuse them. haha

I wanted designated cutters to use when I change both guitar and bass strings. These work fine for those jobs. I had to squeeze harder than expected to cut the thickest bass strings, but it made a clean snip.
