After almost 50 yrs of being a drummer I find the one old time accessory on my first drum set with a 20" bass is what is needed on the big 26" Ludwig I just bought. I watched the Ocheltree youtube video on tuning John Bonham's kit. This is the felt strip to use! I've spent years watching idiots fill their drums with foam and cover heads in tape till they sound like cardboard boxes. I owned a music store and sold deadringers for years. They are ALL a waste. Buy the right thickness head to start with and a lighter resonant head. If you're stuck with a cheap luan mahogany shell go with a thick head. If you've got over-ring, re tune and use some moderate dampening like moongel or an external muffler that can be adjusted to take 'the edge" off. Buy this felt strip if you have a 24" or 26" bass. Your bass will go boom instead of thud and you'll be surprised at a cheap cure.

These are exact copies of what I remember from the 70's. They also accomplish what I was trying to do. Muffle the bass a little without the need for external clamp on muffler. Good product.
