Hal Leonard Guitar Book

It is easy to learn from. I am already pretty far in it, and I just started learning guitar. This book was suggested to me by some guitarists I know, and it worked for them too. If you're just starting out you should get this book.

Not for the musically illiterate

I won't give this book a terrible review, since it is probably a good book if you had some experience in reading music and maybe someone you can ask questions to smooth out the rough edges; since I have none of those things I haven't made it past page six. I am sure these diagrams are supposed to make sense but I am just not seeing it, if feel like I am missing a few pieces to this puzzle. Given the layout of the subject matter I can understand, there seem to be gaps in the explanations that I believe were designed to be filled by a teacher of some sort. I think this is more of a teaching tool or reference than a "how to play guitars for dummies" book. In short if you have no experience in music (reading music, playing an instrument etc.), or a teacher or friend that you can turn to for help, I would look elsewhere. The description itself says it all, " The Hal Leonard Guitar Method is perfect for anyone just starting to play acoustic or electric guitar", it does not say "for anyone just starting to learn music".

There are a million guitar books, but if you're starting from zero guitar knowledge, this one is the best. Even if you have no music theory background, the exercises and repetition make it intuitive to understanding notation piece by piece. The audio samples are very helpful.

I found that the book is broke down real simple for beginner learners going string by string and slowly going into chords. Overall I am very pleased with the book I wish you had more theory on music but as far as playing the guitar it's a very good beginner book. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is just learning how to play.

  • Good introductory book

Good for someone with a little experience in reading notes and music who wants to see if the guitar is something they have a knack for. Starts out with readings notes, where the notes are on the guitar, and progresses through practicing chords, scales, and strumming techniques. Lays a good foundation for more advanced learning.

Is the guitar method complete edition books 1,2 and3 available with the CDs or must the audio all be accessed on line? I see some with the front cover showing "with CDs" but then the text of the ad shows it must be downloaded via a code. If both are still available where can I get the CDs? Also, is there a difference between the CDs and the downloaded version? Thank you.
