Ibanez

collapse expand iconDescription

Over 30 years ago, the SR established Ibanez as the leader in innovative bass building. Throughout the years, we’ve made fretless versions of this classic for a limited number of esteemed Ibanez artists. Now, the Ibanez Bass Workshop makes this much sought after option available to SR players everywhere with the introduction of the SR Portamento. The SR Portamento offers a Rosewood fingerboard that extends the length of the standard SR neck to a hefty 30-fret length. Several years in the making, the SR Portamento's new AeroSilk piezo system delivers an uncanny touch of hollow-bodied openness, and realizes the innovative Upright Double Bass sound to blend into the mix that both inspires and redefines the role of the solid body bass.

I traded in a Conklin GTB7 and a German Warwick Corvette fretless for this. Both of those are great instruments in their own right. But this is terrific. The 7-string Conklin was fun, but big and heavy. The Warwick, while gorgeous and good-sounding, was also heavy - and did not go 'mwah'. Ultimately music is about sound and playability, and this Ibanez has both of those in abundance. And it looks nice too. I have it going 'mwah' on every string but the low-B. The E string does it somewhat, but the four higher strings do it up and down the entire fingerboard. Which goes all the way up to the neck pickup, 32 note range. Just wonderful.

Great for a nice fretless tone. I got this as an upgrade from a bass I converted to fretless. This one has great action, needed minimal setup, and has a lot of controls to sculpt the tone.

My first fret-less bass. This thing is not anywhere near as heavy as I had expected compared to other 6 string bass guitars; This bass is actually very... medium-light in terms of weight. I kind of went out on a limb here because I like the fret-less sound but was slightly intimidated because I didn't have access to a fret-less and therefore couldn't try one out before purchasing. Well, if you have ever played guitar with a slide, it's easier to pick up than that. The markers on the side of the fretboard are more than enough guidance. It's super comfortable to play both sitting and standing. Out of the factory box with the stock setup, the B string gives me some buzz after tuning the instrument up but it is not noticeable when plugged in and can most likely be overcome with a minor adjustment. Lately, I'm impressed all the time by the quality of Indonesian made instruments. If I didn't know the price of the SRF706 and someone asked me to guess, I'd probably guess somewhere in the neighborhood of $1200-$1500. I would like to see the SRF706 available in a more vibrant, aesthetically pleasing color. Other than that, I have no issues with it.
