These appeared to be in the factory boxes. Upon opening the first I found a Crack in the top running from the neck towards the bass side of the bridge. Musicians friend sent me a second one and upon inspection noted two cracks in the binding on the treble side a closer look showed the neck was cra ked where it meets the body.

I bought this as a student mandolin for my middle school age child. With a fair amount of attention to set up it is a very respectable mandolin for the $. If I was going to gig it I'd consider replacing the tuners and maybe the bridge but it is as good a mandolin as I've played in it's weight class. My usual workaday mandolin is a late 1950's Gibson and this does not have the 'woody' tone of that instrument by any means but it is bright clear and on pitch throughout the fretboard. The fit and finish is far better than the other imports I looked at in the same price range.
