Ibanez

collapse expand iconDescription

Over 25 years ago, the SR established Ibanez as the leader in innovative bass building. Throughout the years, Ibanez made fretless versions of this classic for a limited number of esteemed Ibanez artists. Now, the Ibanez Bass Workshop makes this much sought after option available to SR players everywhere with the introduction of the SR Portamento.

The SR Portamento offers a Panga Panga fingerboard that extends the length of the standard SR neck to a hefty 30-fret length. Several years in the making, the SR Portamento's new AeroSilk piezo system delivers an uncanny touch of hollow-bodied openness, and realizes the innovative Upright Double Bass sound to blend into the mix that both inspires and redefines the role of the solid body bass.

30 Fret Neck
The SR Portamento features an extended 30-fret Panga Panga fretboard for playing in upper registers usually only accessible on an upright.

5pc SR Maple/Bubinga Thru-Neck
The SR Portamento features 5-piece Maple/ Bubinga thru-neck for increased sustain and superior tone.

Piezo Level Control
On the back of the SR Portamento are recessed controls assigned to each individual string to control the volume of the Ibanez-exclusive AeroSilk Piezo pickup. Perfect string balance and response can be achieved by adjusting the volume to accommodate different string gauges.

Custom bridge for AeroSilk Piezo System
The Custom bridge is created specifically for the optimum performance of the AeroSilk Piezo pickup system. Unique plastic saddles were designed to work in concert with the piezo pickups and enhance the acoustic "stand-up" quality of the sound.

Bartolini MK-1 Pickups
The MK-1 pickups are a split coil design that provides a very wide frequency range and enhanced definition for maximum accuracy. The Neck and bridge pickups have equal response, like traditional single coils, but without the hum and noise.

AeroSilk Piezo system w/Active tone control
The EQ section incorporates the controls of the Bartolini pickups with the AeroSilk Piezo system. Controls include a neck volume, bridge volume and bass & treble controls for the Bartolini MK-1 pickups and a Master volume and a tone control for the Piezo system.

I cut my teeth on a lined fretless. Been doing lined fretboards for 37 years. Was a little apprehensive of the blank fretboard, but the side fret markers made it easier to play notes in tune. If you know your fingering technique, you can produce a biting, throaty, warm and gritty m'wah note. Tone is incredibly rich and thick. Controls responsive. Weight was unexpectedly lite and comfortable. When it comes to my fretless basses, the Ibanez is the only one I play now. Worth every penny.

Few fretless basses in stores to try. Played the fretted versions and read reviews. The Ibanez neck and the look sealed. However, this is an unsealed fretboard and is prone to back-bowing (fret buzz) if the humidity drops low. So keep it humidified and you will have an excellent bass.

    • All the bass I needed in one .

My main bass that I currently play at this time in my life is my Double Bass. I have always wanted to purchase a fretless electric, as I have other electric (fretted) basses. I absolutely enjoy playing this fretless bass. Being a double bassist, I don't miss the frets or the fret noise. I did have to tighten one of the knobs with an Allen Wrench. Yes, I recommend the Ibanez SDGR SRF700.

Don't let anyone tell you not to use roundwounds with this, it sounds fantastic with them. So if you prefer them, go right ahead. It will sound (even) less like an upright, but that's no matter and not why I wanted it. Mixing full piezo and about half bridge PU (neck PU off) gives an intense growl on the low end. Piezo PU doesn't sound that great all by itself. Only issue for me with this is the lack of fret lines, the lines on the top of the neck aren't enough, and they won't be for most people. One can use double bass method (Smandl, etc) below the 12th "fret" but above that intonation is very challenging, even when staring at the neck. I've always played fretless btw, but do need the lines.

I just bought this Ibanez SRF 700 Bass, I've never really used a Fretless outside of fooling around with one at the store a few times...but it did intrigue me and I wanted to get something different from my other Basses. Well, this is a VERY Nice Looking, Nice Playing and Sounding instrument for the money. It's very comfortable to play and I Love the Fretboard, it is Un-Lined (That was Important to me...seeing lines on the fretboard, to me, almost defeats the purpose of a Fretless Bass) Because, there are side markers and small Fret Lines on the side of the neck, I find it is extremely easy to intonate properly. So for me, I get the ease of playing on a very fast, comfortable neck, that I can feel as confident on as a normal Fretted Bass...but get that Fretless Sound and Feel...and the rather Cool Look of a Totally unlined 30 fret Neck. This is a Very Nice Instrument...if you like a 5 string, they have the SRF 705 model, and it's terrific, too.

The spec says 30-fret length. Does that mean 30-inch scale? Or are there really 30 fret positions?
