The LP211R Rosewood Standard Clave is larger than the LP Traditional Clave and is crafted of kiln-dried exotic hardwood.

Clave (pronounced clah' vay) is the rhythmic pattern that forms the basis of Latin music. Clave playing is phrased with a 3/2 or 2/3 feel (3 beats then 2 beats, or 2 beats then 3 beats). Claves are also the traditional instruments used to play a group's rhythmic beat, and are comprised of 2 sticks that are struck together to get a sharp, cracking sound. One stick is called the clave, while the other is the striker.

The clave lies in one hand, between the fingertips and the heel of the hand, with the thumb out for support. This space between the clave and the palm of the hand creates a sound chamber. The striker is held as a beater in the other hand and is struck against the clave.

In this set, the clave (10"L x 1-7/8"W) is larger than the striker (10"L x 3/4"W) and it features a cut-away sound chamber designed to increase volume and vary sound qualities.

I'm giving 5 stars as this is exactly what I was looking for. But even though the "African" claves are larger, these are BIG! Playing claves involves cupping your palm for volume (+ or -), and this cut away version makes that especially sensitive, which I think is good. I got it on sale and may not have paid full price, but am very happy with the sounds. The LP211R claves create a deeper, "TUNK" or "DHONK" sound than the thinner, more common "TINK" or "CLINK" that you typically hear ("Heart of Glass"...) I have big hands (XL gloves) so I like the feel of this set. I'm a drummer, not a percussionist per se, but I will put down my sticks and play these for a song during practice. These are fun, professional, and LOUD enough to cut through, but produce a slightly deeper sound than what's on records. Another star for ROSEWOOD (but why does the pack say "Hardwood"?) These instruments rely on pro's to play them properly, but even at my level these sound great!
