vintage replacement
I've had my supraphonic 5.5 x 14 snare drum since 1975. I have always had to push up the center part of the strainer then push the lever into place to engage and push up the center part of the strainer then pull off the lever. I changed everything with the p85 replacement, evans dry, and prosound 30. The p85 replacement has been working perfectly. If you are going past a medium pressure on the snare you are choking them. I agree that the strainer isn't the best but it works. It's like a lite weight cymbal stand (I wouldn't put too much of a load on it). I bought a epic brick and a supralite and the strainer looks like a beefed up p85 (I cant find a part no.) but I think that they should use that on all of their snares and the black beauty, it wouldn't be original anymore but they changed the process that they used to make the shell. No, I wouldn't recommend this to a friend unless they are doing a easy replacement fix and want to stick with ludwig parts.

I tried this out
This throw off is rather thin and flimsy, but if you don't disengage your snare often and just leave it on it should work fine. Have heard from others it doesn't support real high snare tension, but good for mid range. I was going to use this one myself, but the hole spacing was too short. For those who need to know, the spacing on this throw off is 2.5 inches. I needed 2 3/4, almost.....

I bought a 6.5 x 15 Supraphonic about 18 months ago. It came with P88 throw-off. When you turn it to adjust the snares, you can feel what appears to be notches or presets. I don't like that at all. I prefer the traditional P85 which allows you to adjust the snares to that point that's just right for the sound preferred.
Works Great!

I have Ludwig snare with the P85 throw off, it is maybe 20 years old and still works great. I upgraded the throw off on a 10" snare with the P85, and I'm very happy with the result!

I was stressed out with my vintage p85 that only took the string cord so I swapped out for the modern p85 so I could get a tighter snare wire secure than them being rattling and lose. Best decision ever.
