MXR

collapse expand iconDescription

The MXR Dyna Comp is an iconic compression pedal that has been a staple of professional guitar rigs for decades. This highly versatile effects pedal gives guitarists an easy way to add sustain to solos, even out volume levels, or achieve a distinctive percussive "click" for clean rhythm tones. The M102 Dyna Comp features two simple controls—Sensitivity and Output—that allow you to precisely control the amount of compression and output level. Powered by a 9V battery or optional AC adapter, this compact yet powerful pedal produces an ultra-clean compression effect with zero noise.

Legendary Sustain and Dynamic Control

The MXR Dyna Comp is renowned for its ability to produce infinite sustain and dynamically shape your tone. It utilizes a proprietary limiter circuit that varies the gain to keep your output signal constant. This allows you to boost your instrument's sustain without increasing volume. The Sensitivity control lets you determine the threshold at which compression kicks in, while the Output knob adjusts the overall volume level. This simple yet effective design has made the MXR Dyna Comp an essential tool for lead guitarists and rhythm players alike.

Clicky, Percussive Clean Tones

In addition to adding sustain, the MXR Dyna Comp is capable of producing a signature "clicky" clean tone when cranked up. This distinctive sound has been used on countless pop and rock hits. By maxing out the Sensitivity control, the Dyna Comp clamps down on your signal to create a squashed, pulsating tone with a sharp attack. This effect works best with single-coil pickups and a clean amp setting.

Simple Operation and Roadworthy Design

With only two knobs and a compact housing, the MXR Dyna Comp is extremely easy to use and fits comfortably on any pedalboard. It features a durable die-cast chassis, easy-access battery door, and non-slip rubber pad for stable operation. The Dyna Comp's streamlined interface and solid construction have made it a favorite of guitarists for over 40 years. For crystal-clear compression and a legendary clean tone, look no further than the MXR Dyna Comp.

Alligator Compression

When I first starting playing guitar, I had no idea what a compressor did. When folks tried to describe it to me, it seemed kind of vague and I really didn't get what they were saying. Years later, I have a home studio and now compression is a huge part of every recording I do. While I have plug-ins to do so online, a often reach for the MXR Dyna Comp Compression Pedal when recording guitar or bass. The MXR pedal is the standard compression pedal. It's the alligator of the pedal world--it has been designed so simply and perfectly, that like the alligator, it doesn't need to evolve at all. It works for what it needs to do. Also like an alligator, the MXR can clamp down on your sound with its attack and keep it in check. While compression is useful in small doses to keep the guitar sound at an even volume, after playing around with this pedal you'll soon realise that the compression can alter the tone, and in fact that way you play the guitar as well. You can get nearly endless sustain, or crisp, clean tones that cut through the mix. I've had my pedal for a while, and it still works beautifully. A compressor is an integral part to any performing or recording lineup. Check one out and play around a bit and you'll see what I mean.

Didnt Work For Me

The Dyna Comp was the first compressor I tried: it just didnt do it for me. Operation was very noisy, and I never could dial it in to a satisfying compression. I suspect my own inexperience with compression at the time contributed to my problems. (I ended up going with an Empress Compressor which has worked great and become my always-on pedal).

I think it offers a good value for the price. Easy to use only two knobs. I think the sensitivity gets a bit out there beyond 10 o'clock or so but I all reviews are subjective based on what you need and want your sound to be. Great service from Kyle at Musician's Friend.

I've got a ton of pedals in my collection, but I've never owned a compressor, so I decided to give this one a try, because I've seen it on so many boards. You can use this thing as a regular compressor, or you can push your amp with the output control. I was blown away by the sensitivity control, and the crisp thump that it gave my notes. There was no unwanted noise or feedback with this thing engaged. Now my only problem is playing without it, because the noticeable improvement to my tone is insane with this thing running.

I used a boss compressor/sustainer in the past, and had purchased a super comp (MXR) for my larger pedal board. This one is for a 4 pedal Nano setup. I choose it due to the ratings. It is easier to use, than the Super Comp, and in my opinion, easy to dial in compression. Sound is very good.
