MXR

collapse expand iconDescription

The MXR Rockman X100 Analog Tone Processor effects pedal brings the legendary sound of the 1980s to your pedalboard. This all-analog recreation of the iconic Rockman X100 headphone amp, originally designed by Boston's Tom Scholz, delivers the same crystalline cleans, crunchy harmonics and shimmering modulation that defined an era of arena rock. With its four iconic tonal presets, carefully calibrated compression and bucket-brigade chorus, the Rockman X100 Analog Tone Processor is a must-have for guitarists seeking to capture the magic of '80s rock.

Four Classic Presets for Iconic Tones

The Rockman X100 Analog Tone Processor features the same four iconic presets as the original headphone amp. CLN1 and CLN2 offer two distinct clean tones, each with its own EQ curve and high-power sustain. CLN2 delivers a crystal-clear, pristine sound, while CLN1 provides a more mid-focused, punchy tone. On the gain side, Edge mode offers a moderate overdrive that's highly responsive to your guitar's volume knob, cleaning up beautifully for dynamic playing. Distortion mode unleashes high-energy overdrive and sustain, perfect for soaring leads and powerful riffs.

Recompressed for Clarity and Punch

A key component of the original X100's sound was its complex compression circuit, which kept the signal clear and punchy whether clean or dirty. The MXR Rockman X100 faithfully recreates this compression circuit, tailoring it for optimal performance across all four modes. The result is a dynamic and responsive feel that enhances your playing, whether you're playing delicate cleans or aggressive overdrive.

Bucket-Brigade Chorus for Shimmering Textures

The Rockman X100 Analog Tone Processor features the same classic MN3007 bucket-brigade chip found in the original headphone amp. This legendary chip delivers a lush, shimmering chorus that adds depth and dimension to your sound. With a simple push of the Chorus button, you can instantly infuse your playing with the iconic chorus effect that defined '80s rock.

Versatile Features for Modern Players

The Rockman X100 Analog Tone Processor is more than just a faithful recreation; it also includes features that cater to modern players. The pedal offers both mono and stereo modes, allowing you to expand your sonic palette with a wider, more immersive sound. You can also connect an external footswitch for hands-free control of the Mode switch, making it easy to switch between presets during live performances.

I would use it mainly for home recording. Not so sure about live gigging with a band although it might work for my solo gigs. Seems to sound better at lower volumes. I wish it could run on a battery, needs the adapter. Seems that might have been an option but it's not.

The functionality of the unit is excellent, increase in the gain adds that glorious compression. You can really take a walk back in time through the 80's with this pedal. I run this through a headrush frfr12 and it sounds great, in the effects return of my Marshall= amazing.

    • I loved it in 1984….

I owned one of these back in 1984 when it was a beltclip model! I bought one of these as soon as they were offered. I kept it for a week, then traded it off. I found out drawbacks to this pedal, and they were same on the 1994. No switching w/out fingers unless you buy a footswitch.

As a one trick pony it's good, I'd say it's a 4 in one. You can't toggle between the 4 modes without major volume changes. I'd suggest MXR put 4 trim pots inside the pedal OR have 4 access holes to adjust so you can get 4 modes without having to manually adjust. I figured that would be the drawback! It's going back!!!

This is the perfect 80s coke tone. The only thing missing is the echo.

    • Great retro 80's tones

I love using my rockman to jam out with those great 80's songs. Yes, there the obvious Boston, ZZ Top, and Def Leppard tunes, but you can tweak this with other effects and generate some great tones that really cut through the mix. My only con would be that being able to set presets for each channel would be nice.

what does it mean when the specs say mono and stereo and 1/4 mono output and 1/4 stereo output. it looks like one mono output to me. Does stereo simply mean the chorus effect?

There is an internal Mono/Stereo switch. When using a TRS splitter cable, the selected MODE preset will be split evenly to both channels. If CHORUS effect is engaged, the effect will be varied on the left and right channels for a more spacious and dynamic effect. Note: If using a standard (mono) instrument cable in stereo mode, the pedal will work as if in mono mode but the signal will be cut when pedal is bypassed.
