Mapex

collapse expand iconDescription

Made with a 1 mm stainless steel shell, the Armory Series Tomahawk snare from Mapex has penetrating accuracy and long-range projection. The focused power of its rimshot is resonant. The steel shell features a rounded 45-degree bearing edge for focused brightness with plenty of volume.

The shell is fitted with a piston strainer and vertical throw-off that enable quick, smooth operation and prevent snare wire tension changes during play. The precision-tooled solid steel Armory Tube Lugs deliver greater tuning accuracy and shell stability while giving the drum an elegant yet modern appearance. The shell also offers a black chrome finish.

I bought a previously purchased but unused Tomahawk that was returned by the original owner who evoked the trade option when he bought an Armory kit. So, the drum was for all intent and purposes, brand new. It lived to its reputation of "projection and penetrating accuracy" not too mention that it is to me, a very beautiful drum. During one of my first gigs with it, however, it went woefully out of tune. In fact one of the tension rods almost completely detuned in the area where I play very hard rimshots (I'm a hard hitter.) I researched this online to learn that this is a common problem among many drums and is easily remedied with lug locks. I haven't tried this yet but if the problem is successfully fixed, this drum will be a keeper.
