Poplar's balanced characteristics provide the ideal canvas for a piccolo snare, allowing its voice to shine through without unwanted ring. Wanted to try a piccolo for some time, and with the price, I figured why not? Great crisp pop. Easy to tune, with no ringing to deal with.

I bought this drum and switched the head with an Evan's HD dry, played it at church and I must say it is a great addition to my set. The only problem I have is that it does have a ring to it but that's nothing that damper moon gels can't fix…but overall great snare!!!!!

When I demo'd the Mapex Poplar Piccolo, I was not looking for a snare drum, as I am pretty well sated with a substantial collection, two Mapex among them, though no piccolo's. Having remembered the impact that hearing one in performance made on me years ago, I decided to give this one a test drive at the Dublin GC in California. I was most impressed by the tone of the relatively soft Poplar wood. Very sweet and resonant. So I purchased the drum and took it home and placed it not in my collection but on a snare stand and started working with the tuning. Within minutes I found that sweet spot. I had a gig coming up and I really wanted to use it but could not be sure that the volume of such a small snare would be sufficient to both cut through the mix and project to the audience. I took the gamble and did not even bring a backup snare. Well everyone must have heard what I did as well, because the tips just flowed. Totally unnecessary to really lay into it; the projection is so nice in this medium sized room. (50-75 people) At the end of the evening I told my bass player I had added this, another snare drum to the collection. He of course rolled his eyes. Non-drummers don't get our fascination with the tonalities of different snare drums. ;o) At any rate this one fell in with the story of the holy grail; how modest it it was, yet how powerful. Yeah, it's that good.

This Mapex piccolo snare was exactly what I was looking for. I have been buying Mapex products for awhile now, and their quality always impresses me. And the price point was amazing.
