Maxon Compact Series Ambient Stereo Chorus Guitar Effects Pedal

Description
Stunning on clean sounds and aggressive on distorted tones, the ASC10 is equally at home in the front-end or the FX loop of an amp. Dual, phase-inverted outputs allow for panning of the ASC10's effect between two amps or tracks, or run mono from output B for a more dramatic chorus effect. The ASC10 features a low-impedance buffered bypass, allowing it to drive long cable lengths or other effect units without loss of signal.

Features
- Classic analog chorus circuit
- Wide stereo split sounds like 2 guitars playing at once
- Rate and Depth controls with extended operation range
- Stereo outputs
- Works in FX loop or front-end of amp
- Buffered Bypass switching with low impedance output

Bright and wide analog chorus

When I compared the Maxon Asc 10 to a Boss ce-2w chorus, the maxon was almost nicer sounding on the clean tones. The maxon was definitely brighter in tone than the ce-2w, which worked well on the clean channel. But I felt that the boss ce-2w worked better with distortion as the Maxon had a pretty noticeable treble boost. I do tend to use a lot of treble/presence in higher gain settings but the Maxon sounded rougher with higher gain settings than the ce-2w because of this high frequency boost. I will say that a lot of the bright sounding chorus pedals I've tried do have similar issues when used with a brighter distortion tone. And I suppose you could adjust your guitars tone knob as you turn the chorus on and off.. but it's not always convenient if you want want smooth transitions from chorus to no-chorus. I also compared the Maxon Asc10 with an Ibanez csmini chorus and found that I could dial in almost identical settings on both pedals.. which makes sense since Maxon used to build pedals for Ibanez and I believe both of these circuits are probably based on maybe an Ibanez cs9 chorus. Now I notice that the Ibanez has about the same amount of high end brightness which creates a nice chime on a clean guitar tone. The Ibanez to my ears didn't sound quite as hifi as the Maxon but it was only a very subtle difference. The maxon is more expensive than the Ibanez and probably uses higher quality components I'm guessing.. but the Ibanez has the same controls plus the addition of a effect level knob, which can make a huge difference for a chorus pedal. In this case I felt the level control allowed me to better blend the chorus in and also allowed me to soften the high end harshness that I noticed when combined with distortion. The treble boost is less noticeable with distortion when run in front of the amp vs in the fxloop The Stereo chorus effect appears to create chorusing on both outputs(one slightly out of phase) as opposed to a dry output and a wet(vibrato) output.

This pedal is shallow. Hardly detectable when used with other pedals. Thank God for GC's 45 day return cause this ones going back.
