The Perfect Phase Effect Pedal
submitted4 months ago

The only phase shifter pedal I've owned was in the 1970s - a Roland AP-2 Phase II. Loved it but sold it back then. After listening to online video examples of different brands, I finally landed on the Maxon PT999 - and it is the perfect phase pedal to my ears. It has to be heard in person to fully appreciate. The phase travel and speed range are really useable, and the pedal doesn't boost, lower, distort or muddy the guitar signal. It just phases the signal in a musical way. Some have referred to the PT999 as a subtle effect, but it isn't in my opinion. Depending on the rate setting, it has very significant "phasing" - not distortion, which probably has become synonymous with the orange box sound. That's a great sound too, but the Maxon will be the first phase I recommend to people. It's an all-around stellar phase effect, and easily one of the best pedal purchases I've ever made.
