Novation // SL MkIII & Hardware Overview

Description
Do you use a DAW and crave integrating your favorite hardware? Well, you can have the best of both worlds. Real-time record or input notes per step. Play and edit your sequences directly from the keyboard. Record your movements as automation into the sequencer, bringing life to your production. The Novation 49SL MKIII was designed to work seamlessly with Ableton to create an absolutely stunning keyboard controller for Live™. The five color LCD screens give you full parameter feedback, enabling you to see everything you are controlling. The SL MKIII has an exceptionally high scan rate of 10kHz (10,000 times per second), giving the keyboard a huge dynamic range for expressive keyboard performance.
The 49SL MKIII boasts Novation’s finest, most playable and expressive synth-style semi-weighted, sprung action keybed, with their highest scan rate, all tuned to the needs of the experienced player. It also has feely assignable aftertouch and a comprehensive selection of Velocity Curves to suit your playing style. Pitch and Modulation wheels have RGB LEDs that change color to show what track you're working on. Brightness gives you the value of what you're changing. SL MKIII's velocity-sensitive RGB pads have multiple functions: they can be used for launching clips, as steps in the sequencer, they are perfect for the finger drummer, and have polyphonic aftertouch. Components allows you to backup and restore your templates and sessions in the cloud, enabling access from anywhere in the world. All content can also be saved locally.
The V1.3 firmware update delivers one of the most requested SL MkIII features, along with further stability improvements and bug fixes.
The 49SL MKIII also features unquantized recording. In the previous firmware version, Novation introduced micro-step editing, allowing users to position notes off the grid for subtle timing variations. With unquantized recording, users have the ability to record into these micro steps. This means that the organic, human quality of performances and punched-in beats can be captured in all their wonky glory.

Far exceeded my expectations

Originally I picked up a Native Instruments S49 MKII and was absolutely disappointed. The touch encoders where defective out of box, the integration with Ableton was lack luster, and WOW the amount of proprietary features are just senseless. The fact that in order to put the keyboard in scale mode could only be done when using Komplete kontrol is just dumb. Komplete kontrol is only compatible with 3 of the many VST's I have. Fast forward to today and my Novation MKIII came in and right off the bat I am in love! I will say the keys on the Novation MKIII are not as solid as the s49 mk2 but the keybed itself feels the same which was the only thing I liked about the s49 mk2. It was plug and play for ableton and the integration is far more superior than the s49 mk2, along with a million other features and compatibility with my euro rack

Well designed and versatile controller that integrates easy with your DAW and hardware. Features a 8-track sequencer, arpeggiator, 49/61 semi-weighted keys with aftertouch and RGB LEDs above keys, 16 Pads velocity and pressure-sensitive, 18 encoders/pots, 8 Faders, 16 switch buttons, transport, pitchbend/mod wheel, track/octave. Connections include clock out, 2 x CV, 2 x Gate, 2 x Mod, Expression, Sustain, Footswitch, 3 x MIDI and USB. I use this with Cubase 10 Pro, super easy to setup. The InControl feature allows me to switch between DAW and hardware controls with the push of a button. I also use it with Native Instrument Komplete 12, with easy integration by setting up templates to control the various functions of the different VST instruments. The keyboard feels well built and sturdy. The keybed feels good, not as good as the A or S series from Native Instruments but definitely improved from the SL MK2. Pads, encoders and dials feel great. The 5 screens are sharp and work well in displaying the parameters of the encoders and moving through settings. Creating templates for your hardware is fairly easy and is a great feature that allows you to control your synths directly with the controller. Has nice pads in the bottom to keep the controller from sliding around. Power switch allows you to use the controller on it's own without having to power up your computer. Everything is in a nice order to compliment your workflow. Overall, it's super easy to use and navigate, getting you setup and comfortable in minimal time. Overall, Novation knocked it out of the park with this new controller and has set a new standard in controller with software/hardware integration. Being the first product to combine these two, they created a truly unique centerpiece for your studio.
