Very strong and sturdy

This is a no nonsense product. I have been using it with my MIDI controller from almost the past 3 weeks. I could set it up quickly and painlessly. All tools required to set it up are provided with the stand. I don't have a second keyboard yet so could not test the top shelf. But, it looks quite strong and doesn't look like it will shear.

Collapsed During 2 Gigs

If you are going to be using this to gig on a regular basis look for something with a better locking mechanism. Mine came loose on several occasions. One particularly embarrassing moment happened in the middle of a gig and while singing the keyboard stand collapsed and pretty much ruined my evening. It was hard to bounce back from that. I cracked a few jokes and tightened it up then finished the set but it was a nightmare. I still cringe when I think about that happening. After tightening it back up it eventually did the same thing at another gig. With everything else that can go wrong technically in a gig the last thing you want to worry about is your keyboard dropping out from under you because of a poorly constructed stand. Guitar Center should not include this in their line of products if they want to sell and promote quality gear. Luckily my keyboard didn't break but it could have with the force that it fell. Do yourself a favor and buy something better.

  • Poor quality of upper tier

Upper tier is made of low grade materials--the screw stripped after only a few uses. The keyboard on the top tier would have fallen and landed on my lower keyboard if I didn't have a free hand. Don't transport this and set up multiple times, as the upper brackets won't last long.

I bought one of these for use in a home studio as well as light local gigging. Cons first - the locking mechanism is difficult to get lined up just right so your keyboards sit level, I got around this by drawing a line across them with silver sharpie in my sitting and standing positions - much better now. It's also a little bulky - stands out from the wall it's up against significantly further than most stands I've had. To get it to lie flat you have to adjust all of the locks, not just the main one. Other than that it's been really solid. My area has been experiencing several nasty earthquakes over the past week, and its held true like a champ with no slipping of the locks or even lateral movement of the keyboards. I would definitely buy this again.

  • Second tier not usable. First tier is great & solid

The basic X stand is super solid. Sat a 31lb Roland FP-30 with no issues. The second tier is basically useless as I cannot align the 2 sides so that a keyboard sitting on it will get 4 points of contact ie it doesn't wobble when you play.

I'm a pretty physical keyboardist, and the CX-3 is a good 40 lbs. Then I load it up even further -- not just a keyboard on the second tier, I also squeeze a third board in between. Three boards on a two-tier stand!? Can it hold up as well as a Z-stand? Well, not quite -- but it does hold up. Still, I don't take it out on gigs, because the main selling point of the X-stand is instant collapsibility, and that's lost when the second tier is added. Sure, you can disconnect the tie rod ... but it won't really fold flat ... so you remove the second tier and the tie-rod, which gives you more pieces to pack. And now there's nothing really instant about it. As a minor kvetch, the 2nd tier height is only adjustable by the angle. So you can have it more angled or higher but not both. Still, it's worthwhile and I'm happy with mine: cheaper than a Z-stand but almost as strong, and certainly more convenient than building one from 2x4's. What's good: fairly sturdy, portable, reasonable price What's limited: little adjustability, non-integrated collapsibility buy again? Yes.

Needs better instructions, didn't like different pieces in separate boxes. Instructions were misleading and confusing.
