Description
Alesis, the pioneers of electronic drum kits and drum machines, is proud to introduce the SR-18 Drum Machine. The SR-18 provides an arsenal of 600+ drum and percussion sounds to ignite your creativity. Hip-hop producers, rock drummers and electronic music artists will all find inspiration in the SR-18's cutting-edge sound library and performance features.
Cutting-Edge Drum Kits and Electronic Sounds
The SR-18 comes loaded with 50 drum kits that span a variety of musical genres. From crisp acoustic drums to thunderous electronic kits, the SR-18 has the sounds you need. The drum kits can be customized using the dedicated knobs for tuning, ambience and level. The percussion sounds include congas, bongos, timbales, shakers, tambourines and more. With 32-voice polyphony and 12 pads, the SR-18 allows you to sequence complex rhythms and play live.
Effects Engine Adds Depth and Dimension
The built-in effects engine provides reverb, EQ and compression on each of the 12 pads. Reverb adds ambience and depth, while the 3-band EQ allows you to shape the tone. Compression evens out levels and adds sustain. The effects can be used subtly to enhance the sounds or intensely for experimental textures. Connect the SR-18 to your audio interface or mixer to utilize the effects in your recordings and live shows.
AC or Battery Power for Portable Inspiration
Since the SR-18 can run on AC power or batteries, you'll always be ready to create a beat. The battery option provides 4 hours of portable operation, allowing you to craft rhythms anywhere inspiration strikes. The SR-18's compact and lightweight design means you can produce on the go without sacrificing power or sounds. For on-stage or rehearsal use, simply connect the SR-18 to AC power.
Additional Features for Performance and Productivity
The SR-18 provides a metronome, tap tempo and MIDI clock sync for keeping time. The note repeat function, last step mode and real-time recording ensure an efficient workflow. Save your rhythms, sequences and kit settings to the 200 preset locations. Back up your presets using the MIDI out to send to your DAW or another SR-18. The Alesis SR-18, a powerhouse drum machine designed for modern music creation.

Great Machine for the price
I have been using the SR-16 for live perfomances and recording for over 10 years. This is a timely update for a quite remarkable machine. The preset beats. kits, and samples are a MUST HAVE in creating your own style. Use what's already onboard or create something totally spellbinding in the user setting. The onboard effects are an extra bonus. Another upgrade is the instrument jack lets you play wherever...plug in your guitar or keyboards, put on your headphones and jam on the go, on battery power. Let's not forget the high contrast screen being backlit UPGRADE, so no more external lighting on stage to see what programs you are using. I have had people tell me what a great drummer I had, when it was all machine. Playing live with this tool is a breeze, once you get command of the foot switch fills. Did I say it had built in bass guitar...it's a whole rhythm section by itself. Plug the MIDI out to your keyboard or other drum machines and you're a one man band. So if you are a novice or an professional,Live musician or home studio recorder, this is the machine to have in your arsenal of sound.

SR18 Dynamic Articulation is BAD
I just bought a new SR-18 machine, started prepare it for my applications and found that dynamic range of pads is very limited! I would say it is semi-dynamic pads. I mean Sensitivity level - NOT Volume control! Sensitivity has 3 levels ONLY! SOFT (which is no way you will get from Pad it's full volume, no matter how hard you will tap.. if you can call it tapping - it's already more like killing Pad) MEDIUM (winch is NO WAY to get low volume no matter how gently you will try to tap) LOUD (it will allow you to reach 100% of volume with super hard tapping, but forget about soft low sensitivity of pad) I think it is on of a SERIOUS big minuses of Alesis SR-18 machine. Another BIG minus - there is NO USB. It means if you want to make a backups of your grooves/songs you've recorded you need to break your head HOW and WHERE to save your SysEx information. And ALL software that can do this being designed for Win 98 or maximum Win XP. Now I will try to add keyboard and use MIDI connection for recording on SR-18. But if it will not improve sensitivity levels and I will still need to kill keyboard for to get "Dynamic Articulation" - I will sell this machine. It might be good for individual drummer's practicing in garage, or maybe for to play music without any dynamic (like hardcore rock and so on.. ). This is my personal opinion.

The Alesis SR-18 is a welcome update to the now classic SR-16. The sample library is very extensive, ranging from acoustic to electronic sounds. Honestly you could definitely write a full track off this unit and this unit alone with some creative sequencing and the help of a DAW. The SR-18 sounds are wonderfully editable with pitch adjustment up and down an octave, low-pass non-resonant filtering, and probably most importantly decay editing. The onboard compression/EQ processing options sound quite good and the reverb algorithms are actually stellar in my opinion as well. They really deliver amazing & lush sounding standard reverbs as well as more washed out or effecty type algorithms. The onboard sequencer is easy to use but a little tiresome. Sequencing from a computer is much better for getting the nuances of off-the-grid looseness. If you wanted to gig with it you could program in the DAW and then record unquantized straight in to keep your original computer programmed feel. The only real downside to this unit and it's somewhat irksome is that the sample library isn't organized super intuitively. Alike samples aren't always grouped together so if you're looking for which clap to use for instance, you can't just browse all the options in series. Apart from that the samples are really quite useable and even the bass/synth sounds are pretty interesting too, even if they don't have any real-time control. The SR-18 does so much to enhance the SR-16 that I really hope we get a similar & unexpected leap to what Alesis does in its hopeful next upgrade.

The SR-16 on steroids! This thing has BASS sounds so you can make your own backing track, just add vocals and/or guitar. If hip-hop is your thing, this can make killer beats to rap over. Techno beats are also at hand. Tons of drum and percussion and bass sounds. Maybe rename the unit "The Beatmaster" ha My advice is to play with the unit as long as you can without going into the manual, but you will eventually. I found the quick start guide helpful. Initial quality is excellent. This is an exciting unit so far, but I have just scratched the surface.
So far a great unit! Still learning the multiple options.

Use this for practicing. It is fairly easy to use. Like the stock beats and the variety. The builtin bass is nice to have for the stock tracks but haven't figured our how to change the key easily yet. Can also disable it. The sound is great and is much better than my old HR16.

I will use it for backup percussion for a young drummer to find the tempo.. Does it allow you to save different tempos to different beats. During live performance if im going from 100 to 85 I need to just change the pattern because sometimes we start with just percussion, it would be to difficult to have to change the tempo also. Please help!!
It could work for that, but honestly it would probably be easier to just get a beat pro or something similar that will do the same job, just be streamlined for that use, unless you'll also be using it for producing beats as well.submitted4 years ago

CAN THIS DRUM MACHINE BE USED WITH A TASCAM DP 03SD RECORDING STUDIO ? IF SO , WHAT ARE THE CONNECTIONS TO USE?
Yes it can. You would need a cable with a 1/4" connection going to either another 1/4" or an XLR.submitted4 years ago

Is the Alesis SC16 a better machine for a lower to intermediate player who plays primarily at home or with friends? The reviews of the SC 18 make it sound too technical and not very dependable. Thanks, Dan
They both have a learning curve but the SR-16 may be a little simpler. Give us a call if you would like some help.877 687 5403submitted6 years ago
