BOSS Nextone Guitar Amplifier Editor Overview by Peter Honoré and Chris Buck

collapse expand iconDescription

Combining classic tube sound and feel with next-generation tonal diversity, the BOSS Nextone series presents an exciting, modern concept in professional guitar amplification. Distinctive channel voicings deliver a wide range of inspiring tones, while four selectable Class AB analog power amp types provide instant access to the unique characteristics of 6V6, 6L6, EL84, and EL34 output tube sections. Backed by BOSS advanced Tube Logic approach, each power amp type re-voices the entire circuit from input to output, putting the complete sonic experience of these signature power stages in one amp for the very first time.

Want to dive deeper with even more sound customization? Just connect to the Nextone Editor and become a virtual tech, fine-tuning bias, sag, EQ, and other internal settings to perfectly match your individual style and touch. Nextone also includes convenient modern features for stage playing, such as built-in effects, a line out for mic-free direct tone, and a power control for expressive cranked-amp sound at manageable volumes. And thanks to Tube Logic, you get to enjoy all the great sound and response of your favorite tube designs without the backbreaking weight and ongoing maintenance hassles.

Next-Generation Guitar Amplification with Tube Logic
Widely acclaimed by guitarists everywhere, the Tube Logic design approach delivers real-deal sound, feel, and response by reproducing the complex interactive behaviors of tube amps in every way. This comprehensive process also brings valuable advantages for today’s players, including greater reliability, reduced weight, and maintenance-free operation. Tube Logic evolves even further with the Nextone series, unlocking access to deep tone customization features that are impractical or impossible with traditional tube designs. A Nextone amp puts the true response characteristics of the most famous amp designs at your fingertips, allowing you to tweak your sound with unmatched precision.

Instant Power Amp Re-Voicing
In a tube-based guitar amplifier, the preamp is important for basic tone shaping, but it’s the power amp design that really defines the overall sonic signature and playing feel. Most amps use a specific output tube type, while a rare few allow you to swap out different power tubes. Unfortunately, this process usually requires physical tube replacement and bench time with a tech, making it expensive and inconvenient. For the most part, you really needed to buy multiple amps to access the unique tonal characteristics of different output tube sections—until now.

Nextone changes all this with the ability to instantly re-voice its analog Class AB power amp section with one of the four classic designs. American sounds are represented with 6V6 and 6L6 output tube types, while British sounds are represented with EL84 and EL34 types. Unlike modeling amps, which simply feed pre-cooked amp models through a non-reactive amplifier, selecting a power amp type on the Nextone physically changes the complete output circuitry, as well as the way the preamp and speaker interacts with it. This makes the entire amp perform authentically at each setting, providing realism that’s only possible with the advanced Tube Logic approach.

Cranked Sound and Feel at Lower Volumes
With any tube amp, you really need to push its output tubes to get it to sing at its best. Unfortunately, this means turning up the volume, which is nearly always frowned upon by sound engineers, bandmates, and neighbors. Driven by Tube Logic, Nextone delivers the complex distortion characteristics of output tubes and their interaction with the output transformer and speaker, providing that rich, dynamically responsive sound we love. And with Nextone’s adjustable power control, you can always experience this cranked-amp tone while matching the volume to any situation, be it home, studio, or stage.

Be Your Own Amp Tech and Customize Tones for Your Style and Touch
Nextone features a dual-channel design with clean and lead channels plus a shared three-band tone stack and presence control. Boost and Tone switches are on hand as well, allowing you to add some extra gain and sparkle if needed. With a quick button press, you can switch the amp into custom mode, which provides factory-tweaked variations of the standard clean and lead channels. Better still, the custom mode channels can be fine-tuned to your liking with the Nextone Editor software.

Via a friendly interface, the Nextone Editor gives you deep editing tools to refine the sound to perfectly match your personal style and favorite pedals. Set a channel’s tone stack to American or British types, shape the overall tone with a powerful channel EQ, and even tweak the playing response by adjusting bias, sag, and more. The Tone switch can be assigned to two different types, and the Boost switch can be set for different characters or even be assigned as a compressor. A system-wide EQ is available too, enabling you to define the tonal balance of the entire amp. And with 99 different user setups available, you’re able to customize Nextone’s sound for every gig you play.

Onboard Effects and Switchable Effects Loop
With its built-in delay, reverb, and tremolo effects, Nextone brings even more versatility and convenience to gigging guitarists. Using the Nextone Editor, the delay section in custom mode can be freely assigned to analog, tape, or SDE-3000 delay types or a tremolo effect, while the reverb can be assigned to plate, spring, or hall types. Furthermore, each effect type offers a deep set of parameters for dialing in the perfect tone. The amp also includes a loop for integrating your own effects, with series/parallel operation, loop position, and more selectable via the Nextone Editor.

Practical Features for Performance and Recording
Connecting with just a single cable, the optional GA-FC foot controller provides a command center for channel selection, Tone, Boost, effects, pedal volume, and more. If you want to travel even lighter, up to three FS-series footswitches can be used to control various functions. There’s also a line out for sending a direct signal to a PA, plus a phones/recording output for silent practice and tracking sessions. Using the Nextone Editor, the character of the direct sound can be set to one of three Air Feel settings for a range of mic’d cab tones.

External speaker jacks are included too, with support for connecting up to two 16-ohm 4x12 cabs for even bigger tones. In addition to providing communication with the Nextone Editor, the amp’s USB jack functions as a direct recording interface for your favorite DAW software. Multiple channels are supported, allowing you to record both a cab-emulated output and a dry direct tone for re-amping later through the Nextone.

Great grab and go, practice, or first amp

I've been playing 40+ years, use boutique tube amps mostly but needed something light, small, and able to survive travel because I wasn't about to subject my tube amps to the back of the car covered with luggage and equipment. Videos online for this amp don't do it justice, you have to sit in front of it using your own guitar and start tinkering. I initially sat down with one of my Strats with the amp at 0.5 watts and kind of liked how it sounded and felt, and by the end of an hour had it sounding pretty good, though it sounded thin, which I later decided was the result of a new speaker and the Fletcher-Munson Curve tricking my ears. I sat down with one a few days later and warned the sales person I needed to turn it up. I alternated between 0.5 watts and 20 watts, and, with the master volume at 10, and the lead channel at noon, it got a nice and fat tone with some sag and compression, just what I'd hoped. A bit more tweaking and I felt like it was a good candidate and bought it. Over the last week I've played with the editor, which opens up the amp to you and lets you select from many good starting points, tweak them to your taste, then save them to the amp for your custom preset. The Tweed Lead is what I like, so I stored it and then started tweaking further in the editor and re-writing it to the custom preset. After about an hour I had it sounding very nice in the music room, and based on hearing it louder I figured those setting would work really well. Last night I took it to a jam and played through it loud for a couple hours with my PRS SC-245 and Fender Strat with Raw Vintage RV-50 pickups. The amp worked very well. A friend played very clean R&B on the Strat so I tweaked the amp to 40 watts and the 6L6 tubes, which gave it close to a Twin Reverb clarity and headroom. I'd drop it back to 20 watts and the 6V6 tubes which gave it nice sustain and sag. It's not tubes, it's not modeling, and I don't care. It sounds very good, very tube-like. Check it out.

Never Again.. Not a good experience

The amp was sold to me as new. After a few days I was told that I would have to take a "floor model" that was discribed as "immaculate condition" or they would cancel my order. The amplifier arrived with the back plate broken in half and several other cracks in the case. The amplifier was missing all the screws that hold it into the case except the two top ones which were the wrong screws. The speaker was loose because screws were missing (moved to the top to hold the amp in place) and what was there was loose. There were several scratches and its obvious that someone had taken this thing apart thus voiding the warranty. The manual and warranty info is missing as is the original packing. Very poor... BTW.. I bought the amp as a cyber Monday deal for a Christmas gift. This really sucks... I'll never buy from Guitar Center again.

Bought the Nextone stage 40watt model three years ago and wasn't to impressed at first, but then cranked it up and heard the Angels sing! Holey smokes couldn't believe my ears. Talk about moving some air...The best part is like having four of the most used tube amps in the industry, within just one nice little amp. And yes you can easily gig with the 40watt stage model. I do with a full band on half power sometimes. Great amp and the line is here to stay.

  • Nice features but NOT a Katana upgrade....

I own a small tube amp (15w) and the Katana 100. I was hoping for a near tube experience. Firstly, this amp is generally underpowered, so I would advise against the 40watt version. Secondly, this will not sound as good as the basic tone from my 10 inch speaker tube amp, no matter the tweaking. If you have a Katana and use pedals in front of it, enjoy your Katana, the 100w is uber loud and by the time you put pedals, the difference between tubey-ness is gone. Neither has the nuances and lack of ice-pick from solid state. Best use would be to integrate with midi floor controller to take advantage of the preamp eq and give yourself different settings for your single coil vs humbucker etc. Wanted to love, but this cork sniffer approach to solid state seems a waste of your time whilst you could be playing a tube amp and...actually playing. That all being said, if you own a really lousy amp, or no Katana, and love endless tweaking, go for it.

  • I expect this amp to be bullet proof, and give tube vibe

Have not played live with it yet, should be good. I wanted a solid state amp for reliability. Mostly love tube souynd, but Nextone sounds pretty good with my pedals.

I typically play through tube amps, but there are a few solid states that I enjoy for home use, like the Roland Blues Cube Hot and the Roland Jazz Chorus 40. The Boss Katana is also pretty decent, and a steal for the price, so I figured that I ought to check out the Boss Nextone to get something a little closer to my Blues Cube sound. Right off the bat, I was done with the amp. Both channels were very bassy, and they didn't really punch through the mix. I felt like I was playing guitar through a bass amp. I remember having this concern when the amp first came out, and I tested it out at Guitar Center, but I must've forgotten. If you're looking for something great in the solid state world, I highly recommend the Roland Blues Cube or the Roland Jazz Chorus. If you don't want to spend very much money, then there isn't anything better than the Boss Katana in the lower priced solid state amp category. Avoid the Nextone.

  • Exactly what I was looking for.
