The best snare I've used, by a large margin

I bought this on an impulse one day. I had been looking for a wooden snare, as my other five snares are all metal of one kind or another, and I've always been attracted to wooden hoops, so when I saw this at such an attractive price, I had to give it a try. And boy am I glad I did! It gives me everything I was looking for: body, warmth, and punch. The rimshots on this drum provide the crack of a steel shell, but the wood adds body to that crack. It's wonderfully sensitive, too, at all volume levels. It doesn't shut down at high volume--there's always more if you ask for it--but at the same time, it speaks clearly at the lowest volume, keeping double strokes cleanly separate. It's just the best of all snare worlds, combining every positive attribute into one drum. I've used it in the studio and on gigs ranging from classic rock to delicate close-harmony country, and in every case it rose to the occasion. Add to that the gorgeous design--love the walnut and the double lugs! And the wooden rims are to die for. They make cross stick as meaty as anything you ever heard, cutting through and blending in at the same time. The throwoff is a standard DW design and very smooth and sure. And they mean I can play patterns on the rims and have them be heard out in the audience, even in fairly loud songs. But here's how I know how good this drum is: every job I've played--every single one--someone has come up to tell me how great the drum sounds. Often it's a musician commenting, making notes for their drummer friends, and if there's a drummer in the audience, he will make a beeline for the stage as soon as we're done. Each time I've played a bill with other bands, the drummers in the subsequent bands have asked if they could use my snare. The best drum purchase I've made.

The snare is 10 plys, NOT 18 plys as advertised

This is NOT an 18 Ply snare- as advertised. It's only 10 wood plys. The snare sounds fat but doesn't really have a crack to it. (Maybe it's the wood hoops). Overall I like the snare but I was dissatisfied because it was advertised at an 18ply snare when the inside tag/ sticker says 10 ply maple and walnut shell.

I received an email for a flyer that this snare was on sale, so I started checking it out. Reviews were good and I knew from a previous purchase that the PDP Limited Edition snares where bult well. The picture does not do it justice it looks a lot better. All of the Limited-Edition snares pack the Mag Throw-off which is a huge plus. At first when I picked it up, I thought it was a little light. I got home tuned it to my liking and bam ready to go out of the box almost. I will probably change the heads but for right now I am leaving it as is.

  • I would buy this snare again

I bought one of these drums a couple of years ago I was looking for a wood shell deeper depth snare drum to get a fat full rich sound. The construction quality and looks of the drum grabbed my attention but moreover once I tuned it up just a great drum at all tunings.

  • If you need a snare, try this one!

The second-hand drum kit I purchased a while back came with a wimpy 13" snare that I wanted to upgrade. A new set of heads and some tuning helped, but it still lacked something. I just happened to find this drum on sale at GC and it has a huge, warm sound. I thought about it for a week, then decided that I had to get one. The finish on the drum is great, I love the wood grain on the shell. The snare throw-off lever is a million times better than on my other snare. The stock heads are fine, but I may upgrade them in the near future. One warning: The wooden rims are huge, I had to upgrade my snare stand as well. The overall diameter is about 16". My old snare stand came up about an inch short. I got the high-end PDP snare stand and it just fits.
