    Pearl Surdo Mallets were bought for express purpose of using with suspended cymbal. Didn't like the effect of regular mallets - you could hear the initial strikes of the mallets until the cymbal was "up." Surdo mallets eliminated the initial strike sounds and gave a more mellow sound to the cymbal without losing volume.
