Amazing punchy sounding cab that's built like a tank.

Wasn't even thinking peavey when I was shopping for a 2x12 cab for a recent amp I built. Kept looking around and all I could seem to find under $1000 was v30 loaded cabs. Not that I don't like v30's, just wasn't the flavor I was looking for. I was about to custom order a cab, when I stumbled upon this one. Reading the specs I was like no way. Greenbacks, feet for horizontal or vertical, convertible between open and closed back and can run stereo or mono? Plus made out of 18mm plywood, that must be a typo right? Well ordered it and sure enough all that is true. Nice thick wiring inside, super solidly built and looks super nice. Cleans sound amazing in the closed back configuration. Nice and punchy. But at least with my amp/setup, gained up I think I prefer it open back more. Closed back with high gain it sounds a little boxy to me, though maybe that's just because I need to get used to it (my first closed back cab). Either way though it's good to have the option. I think this cab is as well built as the orange ones everyone seems to rave about.
Excellent Quality 212 Cab on a Budget or Not

I bought this Peavey 50 watt 212 cab a couple of years ago, and it has performed perfectly for both performance and studio. First, the cab is compact, even for a 212, and also conveniently includes feet for both vertical and horizontal placement. This is very helpful if you're using this cab in a variety of situations from home to studio to stage. For example, I tend to prefer a horizontal setup, but at home sometimes a vertical placement is necessary to fit the cab in my space. The cab is decently light for a 2x12 as well. Second, the Celestion Greenbacks by themselves make this cab a steal. No other 212 cabs have this quality of speakers for anywhere near this price. The Greenbacks are excellent for all kinds of music, especially for light crunch to hi-gain tones. They are somewhat less dynamic in terms of the frequency range, so clean sounds are punchy and focused, but nothing like a traditional Jensen/Fender tone. However, this makes the speakers great for a variety of gain sounds. They can tame and focus amps with hissy high-end (think Marshall JCM/DSL or Peavey 5150/6505 amps) to give them a fuller and more focused tone. They pair well with virtually any other amp as well, honing in on the key mids spectrum most guitar sounds call for. Finally, the construction feels solid as well. Cabinets come in all types of plywoods and MDF, and I haven't taken the time to deep dive on those details for this cab. But I can tell you that it feels very solid and high-quality and has held up well with local gigging and home recording for a couple of years so far. All in all, this amp is an incredible value, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a versatile, high-quality, and compact 2x12—whether you're on a budget or not.
