Phil Jones Bass

collapse expand iconDescription

The Phil Jones Bass Cab 27 is a two-way, compact, high-performance bass-instrument loudspeaker.

It features two proprietary PJB 4 ohm 7-inch drivers wired in series (8 ohm total). These units are specifically designed to handle high power levels of bass frequencies with extremely low distortion. A proprietary 3 inch (magnetic liquid-cooled voice coiled) cone tweeter augments the high-frequency extension making this loudspeaker truly extended range. The magnetic liquid is situated and locked in the magnetic gap and provides cooling of the voce coil, increasing the focus of the magnetic field onto the voice coil and also provides liquid damping. The result is a tweeter that has greater dynamic range, lower distortion and smoother frequency response.

The Cab 27 tweeter crossover has minimum phase shift so the tweeter blends in seamlessly with the 2x7" speakers, making it more musical like your instrument and less like a loudspeaker.

In fact, the Cab 27’s frequency response is so smooth; it can easily double up as a vocal monitor or as a music playback speaker.

The bass drivers can move so much air that conventional vents would not work. The PJB dual vent system was designed to allow extremely high air velocities without causing distortion. Typically when vented speakers are driven to their highest acoustic output levels, considerable amounts of air move in an out through the vents and by carefully designing a hyperbolic vent aperture at both ends of the
elliptical tubes, the air flows through more smoothly, creating less air turbulence noise. The result is cleaner sounding deep bass.

The cabinet is solidly constructed with panels of plywood and medium density fiberboard. Giving the enclosure far less vibration and making it rigid and lightweight. Rigid cabinets give tighter and more accurate sounding bass. The Cab 27 is protected by heavy duty vinyl and carpet and has a “kickproof” shock mounted steel grill. A heavy duty recessed handle on top allows for easy carrying. The cabinet has 8 rubber feet to ally the cabinet to be used vertically or horizontally.

This speaker is tiny by bass amp standards, yet it is fully capable of handing 5-string bass fundamentals right down to the low B string. The vent loaded cabinet is specifically tune by using multiple loudspeaker analysis programs to reduce cone movement at the lowest frequencies and increasing low-frequency output.

This a true high fidelity bass cab, amazing detail. I also use it with acoustic guitar AND Keys. The detail on the lowest note of my Yamaha MX88 is incredible. Super workhorse in my studio!

I use this Cab 27 as a home practice amp. Being more of an audiophile than a musician, I'm critical to sound quality. I was shocked with how well engineered the Cab 27 is. The drivers, cabinet, ports and crossover all are designed as a system to provide optimal output, low distortion and flat frequency response over the fundamental and harmonic frequency range of a bass. Amazingly well done at this price point. This is not just a box with a driver and an opening on the back. Extremely well designed and build like a brick sh house.

I have only used it for practice and rehearsal so far, but the sound quality is exceptional. I don't anticipate any issues playing in live situation.

  • It's small and lightweight, but has a monstrous sound

I have a stack with one 15" and 2 10" speaker cabinets. The cabinets are big and heavy. I recently purchased a new car and my gear does not fit. I found this cabinet and it was the right size to fit in my trunk. I haven't played it in a live situation yet, but have practiced and rehearsed with it. The sound quality is incredible. The low B is crystal clear and the notes on the upper end of the neck are as clear as the notes on the lower end.

I play in a classic rock cover band currently and was looking for something more compact instead of lugging around a full stack. I was a bit skeptical from the get go due to its configuration and size. When I received it and plugged it in to play I was blown out of the water! This thing sounds awesome. I have yet to play it in the band but compared to 2X10 cabinet there is no comparison. I can actually hear the low B on my 5-string bass crystal clear. Can't wait to use this live. I've already decided that I there will be a purchase of second one in my near future. Some things to point out are that this comes with a slipcover which is a plus in my book. Also, in the picture it shows rubber feet located on the side as well as the bottom, but when I received my cabinet it only had feet on the bottom. Definitely NOT a deal breaker though. Great cabinet Phil Jones!

Great sound with crisp highs and lows for a really small amp. Perfect for at home practicing, I bought two and connect them together for performances.

Yes, the Cab 27 will work. You should learn what ohmage is if you're going to use equipment like this.

That's not the way to rate a cabinet. It's rated at 200 watts tested at 1000Hz. The vast majority of what a bass puts out isn't anywhere near a 1000Hz. 200 watts generated from a signal played on your G string is not the same as 200 watts generated from your E string. The high G on your G string is 392Hz. The E string is 42Hz. It's a great cabinet.

Do the 7 inch drivers receive a full-range signal, or does the crossover send the higher frequencies only to the tweeter. I know some other systems run the big driver full range and run the tweeter only with the high frequencies.

I have one cabinet already. If I get another and connect them, will this increase the total wattage handling capability of my system. I.e. I have a 300 W head and the peak watt spec for the cabinet is 200 W. Will 2 cabinets increase my wattage capability to 400 W?

We need to know what head you're using. If your head will operate at 4 ohms, you're fine to connect another cabinet. 2 8's = 4. Yes, you will increase your wattage if the ohmage drops but we need to know if your head is capable of this. Give us a call if you would like some help.877 687 5403

You can do it, but you cannot do it safely. The guitar head is not make to push bass frequencies.

This is powered. Ideally you want the watts on the speaker and cab to match
