How to Choose a DI: Active vs. Passive

Peter Janis explains the Pro-D2

Description
The Radial Engineering ProD2 is a premium direct box for superior signal transfer without compromise. The ProD2 utilizes two proprietary custom transformers to provide linear frequency response, ultra-low distortion, and zero phase distortion for pristine audio quality in both live and studio applications. With transformer isolation, the ProD2 eliminates hum and buzz from ground loops, making set up quick and hassle-free. The ProD2 is ideal for a wide range of instruments from acoustic guitars and bass guitars to electronic keyboards, drum machines, samplers, and more.
Unmatched Audio Fidelity
The ProD2 employs premium components and a meticulous design to deliver audio fidelity that is simply unmatched. The two custom transformers provide an exceptionally wide and linear frequency response from 20 Hz to 18 kHz as well as an ultra-low 0.01% total harmonic distortion for crystal-clear sound. The ProD2 also eliminates phase distortion, enabling natural, realistic instrument timbre.
Ground Loop Isolation
With transformer isolation, the ProD2 breaks ground loops that can cause annoying hum and buzz. This makes setup quick and prevents unwanted noise, enabling a pure signal path from the instrument to the mixer or recording device.
Rugged, Roadworthy Construction
Despite its premium performance, the ProD2 is built to withstand the rigors of live use as well as repeated setup and teardown. Its 14-gage steel chassis and durable baked-enamel finish provide rugged protection for the sensitive components inside. The ProD2's compact size takes up minimal space in a rack or pedalboard.
Simple Yet Versatile Operation
With intuitive controls and connections, the ProD2 is simple to operate yet versatile enough for a wide range of applications. It provides 1/4" inputs and thru outputs, -15 dB pad switches, and ground lift. The ProD2's balanced 150-ohm XLR outputs connect to mixer or recording device inputs. Overall, the Radial Engineering ProD2 Passive Stereo Direct Box offers premium performance, durability, and simplicity for superior signal transfer.

Never worry about replacing a DI again!
I own several of these, not one has ever failed me. They are great for anyone from a beginner musician to a touring act. The build quality is fantastic you could step on it, throw it across the room, run over it with your car, and then light it on fire, and it would still work. A great investment for an individual or a company, as you will buy this and never have to worry about replacing it. I only gave it 4 stars because it lacks some of the nicer features its more expensive siblings have.

I use this as a part of a simple tracks rig for running playback through Ableton. It has worked very well. I would argue that this is the industry standard stereo DI, highly recommend this for anyone wanting to start playing with backing tracks. It is plug and play and requires no set up. #sweepstakes
