Rotosound

collapse expand iconDescription

Gauges: .065-.075-.100-.115. Long scale.

The 'Black Nylon Tru Bass' Strings were originally developed to simulate a double bass sound on an electric bass. These RotoSound strings made their most famous appearance on top of the 'Apple' building while Paul McCartney was playing his Hofner bass. You will note that the tension is low, making this string extremely comfortable to play.

Always liked Roto's, but these are the BEST strings I ever played!

I'm doing a total black-out design on an ESP bass, and always liked the feel of flat wounds, so these Rotosound RS88LD black strings sounded like a good choice for the appearance. But I used them with the band last night for the first time and was floored by not only the feel but the sound. First the feel - smooth and silky, the touch and navigation are effortless and fast! Every other string set I've played in the past just felt "routine" and got the job done, but there Roto's were just pure fun! And the sound - usually I have trouble balancing strong lower and upper tones with weak mids on other strings, but everything across the scale on these was strong and equally balanced, the tone both rich and crisp. The sound was SO noticeably better that every guy in the band heard it and commented on how great I sounded. Of course I took credit for that, but the strings felt so great that I'm sure that I did play better. Now be aware - you WILL need to widen the grooves on the nut to receive these wider strings. So get the right tiny round files and carefully widen the slots, but don't go deeper. It IS worth the effort, and the nut will still work for other strings (but you won't want other strings after these!) The quality on these strings is as good as it gets. They are effortless to wind on new, and they stay in tune. Plus they feel like they will last forever. Oh yeah, they LOOK fantastic!

They Could Be Great

First let me say that the feel and the tone were excellent, however on my particular bass they picked up an incredible amount of EMI noise, so much that I had to take them off. Perhaps if my bass had other pickups or if the strings were through the bridge rather than through the body it may have made some difference, so be advised they do sound great, but may not work on you bass.

I have used RotoSound bass strings since I first began to play in 1969. My last set was fitted to my Gibson EB-3 back in 1992 and I hadn't needed to change them. The tape covering resists sweat and oils from the hands so well that they took nearly 20 years of playing without signs of physical wear. I did notice a loss of brightness during 2021, and I think that was due to keeping the bass in its case most of the year without regular playing. I was surprised just how much brighter the new strings were than the ones I took off (which I still save as spares).

  • I would buy these bass strings again

Just all around great strings. Play upright as well so I love the sound of these strings on electric bass. Sounds like my upright.

The sound isn't bad, but I can't keep them in tune, and I needed to adjust the pickup on my 1979 Rickenbacker 4001 just to eliminate the hum.
