The 5017 is the ultimate and versatile front end for recording. For bass I run into the 5017 instrument input, then 1/4 inch parallel out to an Ampeg B15N. Then place a mic in front of the speaker and connect the mic into the 5017 mic input. This is really a two channel preamp, so you can send the instrument output and the mic output separately to your DAW or FOH console, or you can blended the DI & the mic signals into a single output and have control over the blend of the inst. and mic signals. The 5017 Vari-phase allows precise time alignment between the inst. and the mic signals for absolute phase coherency. The on-board Rupert Neve designed compressor uses a single knob, it is very effective, sounds transparent, and easy to use. The high pass filter (HPF) is set at 80Hz and is very useful when I use the 5017 mic preamp section for tracking vocals. And the Rupert Neve SILK feature adds harmonic content adding colorful character. Purchasing this 5017 is really an excellent choice. The sound is pristine, it is versatile, and for what you get it is an excellent value. The 5017 can be the center piece of your analog front-end recording set up, AND you can take it to the stage for live performance. Show up to the gig with this on your bass amp and the audio engineer will geek out on blending the mic and DI, tweaking the Vari-phase and compression. They typically are so into it that they tent to turn up the bass louder in the PA because they dig it!
