I really love this mic! I currently own two of these mics. To me, the SM86 is like a great balance between the SM58 and Beta58. Great balance of low and high end. Crisp and warm sound. Not too bright and not too low. It's absolutely beautiful! I highly recommend this mic. Note: It will require phantom power.

Purchased this mic as a birthday present for my son who is lead singer in a rock band. He's been singing for 13 years and sounds way better than he has on any prior mic. This mic really lets him be heard over the instruments. Based on my prior experiences with Shure mics (running sound for the 13 years my son's been singing), I expect this mic to last a long time.

The Shure SM86 as a "GREAT" microphone. The texture and tone is captured in a very natural way. Compared to the Shure Beta 87a this mic is just as good at $70 less. If you want to cut through a mix with a big sound this microphone is for you. If I needed more I would defintely buy it again. Of course Shure is a solid company in the professional audio world.

I live in a noisy hood and have a home studio, this mic is the best I've ever had. It pics up what I play with a quality sound and minimal background noise. I bought one to sing through and it makes my acoustic guitar sound so good I bought another for that. I haven't dropped it so I can't say much about the toughness but Shure is such a great brand that I'm sure, that it is tough too!

I'm kind of ignorant of audio equipment. What does "phantom power " mean?
Phantom Power or +48V is a method of sending an electrical current through a microphone cable. It is most widely used as a power source for condenser microphones.submitted7 years ago
