I've only been serious about bass for three years, but have always been drawn to to the instrument. I admired the look and sound of the Steinberger bass when it was onstage with Sting when he was with the Police, and never thought I'd get one of my own, but the Spirit series is quite affordable and offers many advantages. 1. Full-scale 34" neck with 24 frets. The neck is narrow which is great for my normal-sized hands and fingers. 2. Full-scale, but compact enough to fit in an overhead compartment in aircraft, doesn't hog the whole trunk diagonally when traveling by car. 3. Zero Fret. Why isn't this more common? By using a zero fret and not having a nut, the XT-2 series can use strings of *any gauge,* without swapping out or modifying an existing nut. 4. Great pickups, smooth-as-silk pots. 5. Included gig bag, shoulder straps and good-sized pocket. Some might criticize the look of the Steinberger, but if that's your issue, this isn't your bass anyway. Showing it off to my guitarist buddy, he said "Whoa. 80's much?" To which I replied "Hells yes. 100% 80's." But great sound. Two very important comments: 1. This is a detuner model. It does not include instructions on how to set the detuner. Let me help: tune your E string to E using the tailpiece tuner. Then flip the detuner lever and use the *top knob* to tune down from Eb as far as B (D is sorta standard). THEN USE THE 1.5 mm SET-SCREW TO HOLD THAT DETUNING KNOB IN PLACE. If you don't, your detuning will return to E as soon as you flip the lever back. This has been called out as "poor workmanship," but it's a feature, not a bug. Detune, use setscrew, done. If only instructions for the detuner had been included.... 2. Both the detuning knob and detuning lever have set-screws to adjust tension and friction. The set-screws are 1.5 mm hex. Included with my XT-2DB is a 2 mm hex wrench. Which is nice, but as you may imagine, does not fit a 1.5 mm screw--good thing for me I already had metric hex wrenches handy.
